2011 Motorcycle Holiday Gift Guide: Boots

Tuesday, November 29, 2011
Protection from head to toe is vitally important for two-wheeled enthusiasts. Proper motorcycle boot selection often takes a back seat to other gear decisions, however, and the reality of this is made clear when looking at crash-related injuries. According to recent statistics, more than 80% of motorcyclists who crash suffer injuries to their legs and feet in particular. Since footwear is the only thing keeping you and the bike upright on a regular basis, MCUSA has provided a breakdown of the best kicks in its 2011 Motorcycle Holiday Gift Guide to Boots.

Alpinestars Supertech R Vented Boots
Alpinestars’ Supertech R Vented Boots have been my go-to boots when it’s time to hit the track. The vented design keeps my sweaty yams cool even when the mercury rises, and the removable booty is easy to pull out and let air dry. The side zipper and single ratcheting buckle makes entry and exit a breeze. Also, the micro-fiber is flexible enough while walking around after your track session. While on the bike, that flexibility allows for unhindered movement fore and aft. The only recommendation I would make is to upgrade the toe sliders to magnesium units right away if you tend to drag your toes. – Justin Dawes

TCX X-Action Waterproof Boots
Last year we got to know Euro giant boots manufacturer, TCX, a little bit better with the Airtech XCR. This riding season we fell in love with a new favorite, the X-Action Waterproof Boots. These latest designs only expand our esteem. Super comfortable, the X-Actions take care of all the requisite requirements for a motorcycle design, plus they are actually comfortable to walk in! Most important for a touring boot, they are completely waterproof. These versatile boots have served us well, whether on sport bikes or crossing the Magruder Corridor during our 2011 Adventure Touring Shootout. – Bart Madson

Sidi Crossfire SRS Boots

Sidi Crossfire SRS Boots
Off-road boots come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Every rider has their preferences and mine coincide with the Sidi Crossfire boots. They have the thinnest, most durable toe box, slick dual-flex hinges and best buckles in the business. Lots of plastic makes them durable, adjustable and repairable and the Sole Replacement System makes changing the soles simple enough for anyone. The Black/White and Black/Yellow versions come with a new hinge system that creates a flatter profile against the bike. These are the boots I prefer to put my feet in for all types of dirt riding whether it’s motocross or dual sporting. Spidi XP-3 Boots

Spidi XP-3 Boots
Bred for high performance riding, the Spidi XP-3 Boots are stamped with CE certification and upper level 1 wear and cutting resistance. A reinforced racing sole helps prevent most crash-related injuries in addition to plastic and carbon protectors at the ankle, shin and heel. The outer material is made of a Lorica/cowhide construction for added durability. Rounded edges help with sliding, as do the plastic toe sliders. In addition, the nylon innersoles resist crushing and puncturing. The design includes a comfortable Air Tech arch support and a diagonal heel construction that keeps the foot ideally positioned while riding. This is a great option for track warriors and those who are involved in high performance sport riding.

AXO Freedom GT Waterproof Boots

AXO Freedom GT Waterproof Boots
AXO is a top name in motorcycle boots and my first set of street kicks from the Italian company was the Freedom GT Waterproof boots. The BOA Technologies steel lacing cinches the mid-shin boot comfortably against the foot and leg with a thickly padded tongue, and is easy to use even with gloves. The Freedom boots are flexible right away and still provide protection with polyurethane molded inserts in the shin, heel and calf. The best thing about these boots is that they provide a wide range of riding coverage. I used them for regular commuting, splashing through hundreds of miles of adventure touring and even put them to use on a racetrack. Waterproofing is excellent and they’re a bit warm in hot temps, but capable of all-season wear. Check out more details in the AXO Freedom GT Waterproof Boots Review. – JC Hilderbrand, Off-Road Editor

Equipped with modern styling and new alloy buckles, the GX - 1 Boots are lightweight for those wanting to hit the track or trail. They’re available in sizes 7 through 13 and colors black and white. If you think you can’t find quality boots at an affordable price, think again.

AXO 5to9 Riding Shoes
Fresh off the streets of Italy comes AXO’s 5to9 Riding Shoes. These high top style kicks are designed for the casual motorcyclist looking for footwear with more protection than what’s available through standard sneakers. The shoe uses a sturdy sole built with abrasion resistant leather and a reinforced toe box. But our favorite feature is its fastening system, which makes use of steel laces and a ratchet for easy fit and removal. The shoes come in two colors that look good on or off the bike. – Adam Waheed
