NYC Motorcycle Sound Devil’s Advocate

Tuesday, December 23, 2008
New York City is requiring motorcycles to ride with EPA-approved exhaust systems. What a draconian measure! Fascist liberal elites! Oh, the humanity! Hold on. Wait a second. At the risk of getting a serious beat down for playing devil’s advocate here, let’s take a dispassionate look at the issue. NYC wants motorcycles to run with EPA-approved exhaust?

Brad Pitt on Motorcycle & Industry Bailout

Friday, December 19, 2008
It’s no secret that Brad Pitt loves motorcycles. He is one in a long list of celebrity riders that stretches back to the beginnings of film and motorcycles themselves. Now it appears Pitt is getting a new ride in his garage, a Ducati Monster 1100S, given as a gift from none other than his stunningly gorgeous wife, Angelina Jolie. Imagine Mr. Pitt rolling over in bed one morning to see Mrs.

Vegas Motorcycle New Year

Thursday, December 18, 2008
This New Year’s Las Vegas celebrations feature Robbie Kneivel jumping over the Mirage Volcano and Robbie Maddison jumping on top of the Paris Casino’s 96-foot-high Arc de Triomphe. All these high-profile stunts, of course, mimic Kneivel Sr. jumping over the fountains at Ceaser’s Palace. Which makes you wonder, what is it about Vegas that make people go nuts?

Honda Exiting Grand Prix?

Wednesday, December 17, 2008
The auto industry is hurting. It seems in recent months we hear nothing else in the news. While the American Big Three grovel in Congress and teeter on the verge of bankruptcy, worldwide economic downturn is affecting the industry as a whole. Honda, the largest motorcycle manufacturer on the planet as well as the fifth-largest car producer, is hurting too – the Japanese firm citing economic pressure for its exit from F1 and the AMA Roadracing series. But could it be?

Get Your Tariff On

Friday, December 12, 2008
Tariffs have been a part of American politics since the beginning. After rebellion from Great Britain, a tariff on imports provided revenue for a fledgling nation that was in deep dept. In the intervening years, tariffs also provided protection to American industry, before US manufacturing became the juggernaut it is today (or used to be). Now we live in an era of free trade agreements and low-tariff trade treaties, but tariffs still pull weight during trade disagreements.

Practicing What Your Bumpersticker Preaches

Monday, December 8, 2008
True story. I was on my way to work this morning, when I noticed the car in front of me was swerving over the lines. An 8 a.m. drunk maybe? I kept my distance but then I noticed the fellow had a "Start Seeing Motorcycles" bumper sticker. So, I started to go around him when there was yet another swerve. What the hell! The guy had something in his right hand that he was rubbing against his upper shirt. Glasses. And not sunglasses either.

Economic Woes = Racing Woes?

Friday, December 5, 2008
Honda has announced its withdrawing from F1 racing because of the tough economic times. Granted F1 is a super-expensive series to compete in, but will companies watching their bottom line put less effort into two-wheeled racing programs? If so, what does this mean for motorcycle racing in general? We’ve already seen Suzuki pull the plug on its amateur support program.

Watching Sons of Anarchy

Friday, December 5, 2008
Is anyone else out there watching the FX show Sons of Anarchy? Of course you are, it is a new hit for FX and coming back for a second season. My views of the outlaw biker drama have been sporadic, really just two full shows - but it was an entertaining couple hours of television.

Troubling Discovery

Thursday, December 4, 2008
A recent story on the newswire caught my attention: Study Shows Motorcycle Engine Vibrations Can Damage Penis Nerves. Great. As if riders didn't have enough to worry about. Sure that old lady peeking over the dash perched on a telephone book, she doesn't see you and may run you over - but now your own bike is trying to ruin your life.

Vespa Gas and Europe

Thursday, December 4, 2008
My summer aboard the Vespa GTS 250 was great. Sure, the scooter was fun, but the best part was how my Chevy Cavalier sat unused in my driveway. 59.8 MPG to 24-ish. Doubling my fuel efficiency was nice, and my mental health was less stressed when filling up the tank was 10 bucks, and not the usual $60. However, a recent trip to Europe put my gas woes in perspective. Even during the apocolyptic summer of $4.
