The eighth annual South Florida Ride for Kids kicked off the 2012 season yesterday by raising $82,277 for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF).

Four hundred supporters came to Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach on a gorgeous morning to ride for brain tumor survivors like Taurin, Brianna, Nick, Shawn, Travis, Jonathan, and Christine — the “stars” of the event.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office escorted the riders on a 90-minute tour before returning to celebrate the stars and their families.

“Thank you for being heroes in my eyes,” PBTF college scholarship recipient Nick, 18, told the crowd.

The children look up to motorcyclists because their generosity makes a difference. “The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and Ride for Kids raise the essential funds needed for our brain tumor research,” added Dr. Iftikhar Hanif, medical director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “Our aim is to cure the kids, but we need to fight together with your help to cure this disease.”

The top fundraisers were:
• Individual: Michelle Craven Meyer, $11,001
• Motorcycle club/chapter: Southern Cruisers, $22,529
• Non-motorcycle group: Weigel, $3,919
• Motorcycle business: Star Cycles, $41,303

Donated Ride for Kids drawing prizes went to Woody Woodruft (Honda motorcycle); Chuck Adrey (AGV helmet); Jeremy Koenig (Dunlop tire); Brian Tarbox (Tourmaster luggage); and Ralph Del Coro (Cardo Scala Rider).

The 2012 South Florida event was organized by an all-volunteer task force, led this year by Yuergen Boehmke, Dave and Rhonda Friedenberg, Rick Morales, and Debra Law.
