Dunlop Sportmax Q3 First Look

Thursday, May 23, 2013
Dunlop, America’s largest motorcycle tire supplier has released information on its latest road rubber: the Sportmax Q3. These new hoops are successors to the fantastic Q2—a versatile street and sportbike tire that won our 2010 Street Motorcycle Tire Comparison due to its class-leading performance and affordable price tag.

Increasing the already high-level of grip and road handling is no easy to task so Dunlop tapped its road racing department utilizing information from involvement in AMA Pro Road Racing as the sole tire supplier in every class including SuperBike, Daytona SportBike and SuperSport.

In addition to utilizing new machinery purchased specifically to build AMA-spec race tires, designers modified the shape of the tires and also tweaked the compounds inside. The Q3 continues to make use of multiple compound tread zones to give riders grip when leaned over in a corner and added stability and durability on straight roads. The tread pattern was also altered with the number of grooves decreasing but the length of each tread sipe increased allowing the tire to evacuate more water on rain soaked pavement.

Dunlop says that the changes net added stability at lean and greater steering response and handling precision. Also of note is the use of carbon fiber in the sidewall designed to increase the tires strength without a significant weight penalty.

Right now we’re in Huntsville, Alabama to sample the Q3 at Dunlop’s motorcycle tire proving grounds before it hits dealers later this spring. Stay tuned for the review and feel free to leave a comment in regards to the new tires and we’ll do our best to answer your question.
