One of the smoothest rides on the road, the Honda Gold Wing is also one of the safest.
As most readers already know, the Honda Gold Wing is the first production motorcycle to feature an optional airbag. But in case its news to you, check out the technology on Honda’s world-wide site. A new web page on the Honda site explains the development process and details on how the system deploys.
Honda’s created the airbag system to reduce a rider’s forward momentum during a fall, citing crash data that the majority of “accidents causing injury or fatality” (68%) are frontal collisions. Utilizing computer simulations and crash test dummies Honda developed the airbag’s shape, position and anchor points on the motorcycle. Four crash sensors in the front fork work with the airbag ECU to trigger the nitrogen gas inflator on impact – all within 0.015 seconds.
debuted the technology in production form on its 2006 Gold Wing.
