Lotus Motorcycles
Lotus, a name synonymous with luxury and speed in the automobile world (not to mention design characteristics that make cars look like they’re moving at light speed in the driveway) has announced a new motorcycle division, simply dubbed “Lotus Motorcycles.”

The first offering from the newly created division will be the Lotus C-O1, a high-performance bike “with integrated racing technology,” according to a Lotus Motorcycle PR released on their Facebook page June 20, 2013. The PR goes on to state that “it (the C-01) will be used of materials like carbon, titanium and aerospace quality steel. It will be a state-of-the-art motorbike powered by an approximately 200 horsepower engine.”

In order to live up to these bold claims, Lotus is bringing in some of their old friends to help with design and construction. Kodewa, a German automobile race team, is on board as is designer Daniel Simon and members of the Holzer Group. Kodewa built Lotus’ new T128 LMP (Le Mans Prototype) and currently runs the LMP2 in the FIA World Endurance Championship. Simon has designed for Bugatti Automobiles and created the black-and-gold livery of the LMP2. In addition to his work with four-wheeled machines, Simon is also the creative source for one of the recent, futuristic iterations of motorcycles seen on the silver screen: the “Lightcycle” from Disney’s Tron: Legacy. He also created the “Bubbleship” from the movie Oblivion.

Simon offered a statement in the Lotus Motorcycles PR: “With the Lotus C-01, we have only one ambition: to create a unique state-of-the-art machine that carries its brutal forces with elegance and style, a high-tech monster in a tailored suit. The C-01, with all its top notch components and materials, is first and foremost emotional, heartbreaking, at times playfully retro, and always clearly a Lotus. Lotus is a glamorous name with a rich history, and the C-01 celebrates it proudly: the shapes of the marvelous Lotus 49 were a main inspiration, and all color schemes pay homage to iconic Lotus racing liveries, such as the dashing black and gold. The intersection of past and future never fails to fascinate, and so does the unique idea of the C-01.”

Performance GmbH, part of the Holzer Group, will work closely in the development of the C-01 and RPC GmbH will shape those space-aged materials into the finished product. It should be noted that RPC GmbH is part of Kodewa as well as the Holzer Group, rounding off the web of interrelation and collaboration needed to pull off what is likely to be an audaciously lavish and over-the-top-spec bike. Images of the new machine are expected to drop in the coming weeks.

Hmm. A bunch of guys with car racing and movie prop design backgrounds are going to make a state-of-the-art, ultra-high-performance motorcycle to compete with the world of Aprilia RSV4's, BMW HP4's and Ducati Panigale R's, not to mention the best that Japan can produce? That should work out... rolleyes
