Here’s to Motorcycle Mike

MotoUSA’s local paper in Southern Oregon, The Medford Mail Tribune
, often runs a small column that highlights the paper’s news clippings from 100 years ago. It makes for an amusing coffee break perusal at times, but none more so for me than this morning when I read the following blurb:
“Motorcycle Mike” broke loose again Sunday night, spurting through the crowd returning from church at Sixth Street and Central Avenue and taking the turn north at Front and Sixth at such speed that it was feared he would crash in to the curb at the Southern Pacific park. The police are of the opinion that the fool is a farmer boy, newly purchased of a motorcycle and half crazy on the subject of speed.
Foolish youth, hassling the god-fearing church folk aboard his rowdy motorsickle. Sounds like Mike was a bit of a trouble-maker, "breaking loose again", certainly he was enough of a hooligan to earn his nom de guerre. You can almost see the stern towns folk, shaking their heads in dismay – about to break into a what’s-gotten-into-these-kids-these-days reverie.
Here’s to Motorcycle Mike, a half-crazy foolish youth from a century ago, guilty of being a little reckless Sunday evening. Hopefully 100 years from now the young folk will be hooning about on their hovercycles or what have you – making old folks mutter and complain about the kids these days.
