Video Shows First Ride on Yamaha's 2009 R1

2009 YXF-R1 in action.
Get your first glimpse of the 2009 R1 courtesy of the European commercial that's posted on YouTube.
OK, we admit we’re itching to hike a leg over the 2009 Yamaha YZF-R1, and are aware that the riding public is chompin’ at the bit for news about how the latest Yamaha literbike stacks up. And while our desires will soon be sated by the approaching press introduction, you can get a solid first look at the motorcycle on the track and hear the M1-derived engine with commentary provided by 2008 MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi courtesy of a video circulating on YouTube.

It is only fitting that Rossi discusses the '09 R1’s characteristics. The bike inherits the crossplane crankshaft technology developed in his championship-winning M1. Each crank pin is positioned 90-degrees from the next, resulting in an uneven firing order of 270-180-90-180, giving the new R1 a claim as the first production motorcycle with this.

Three-time AMA Superbike Champion Ben Spies also got the opportunity to wring out the '09 Yamaha R1 recently at a three-day test in Kylami, South Africa. In only its second track outing, the R1 is already competitive, as Spies posted the second-fastest lap time of the test and was one of only three riders to break the 1:40 barrier with a best time of 1:39.978. Spies did so without testing his full regiment of qualifiers, not to mention that he is still making adjustments to his new ride after previously competing on Suzuki’s GSX-R1000. The motorcycle is still close to production specs, so what they’ve been running on the track is similar to what will soon be available on the street.

Hot on the heels of their very successful redesigned R6 from last year the much anticipated Yamaha YZF-R1 is all new from top to bottom and it has MotoGP written all over it.
The 2009 Yamaha YZF-R1 has been competitive right out of the gate in preliminary World Superbike testing.
In the bike’s first test at Portimao, site of the final WSBK race of 2008, Spies lapped only two-tenths of a second slower than the race Lap Record set by 2008 WSBK Champion Troy Bayliss. Spies’ best time at Portimao was 1:43.9, just off Bayliss’ 1:43.787 that he posted in Race 2. Spies consistently lapped in the 1:44s for most of the session on an R1 fitted with a modified camshaft, an enlarged radiator and the addition of an oil cooler.

“The 2009 bike is at the beginning of its development, but for where it’s at now compared to where we will be when we line up at Phillip Island, it’s hugely exciting,” Spies said.

Spies is not the only one that’s excited. The R1 Forums are already buzzing in anticipation of the motorcycle’s scheduled mid-January release. To bring you up to speed, check out Steve Atlas’ First Look article to get the full run-down on the bike’s new SOQI suspension and updated engine and electronics. Will the revamped literbike have enough trickle-down technology to unseat the reigning Superbike Smackdown Champion, Honda’s CBR1000RR? Tune in with Motorcycle USA to find out.

pig ass ugly. the ugliest sport bike on the market next to the Buell 1125r-which looks like the motorcycle equivalent of a kid with downy syndrome. all the geek and tech talk aside (which does make me want to ride it to see for myself) it is a flat out dud. how could they make such an ugly ass bike? and i thought the 08 cbr1000 looked like a turd on wheels. IMO the new gixxer is the way to go. unless you got a ton of cash to customize this pig ass ugly bike...gsxr1000 is the way to go (and Buell just chokes when it comes to design asthetics). R1 tech...yeah...R1 looks...a cross-eyed retard.
steve lehr -90degree V four  February 27, 2009 08:03 PM
i do believe yamaha built there M1 this way so it could mimic the 90 degree V four and still keep the engine close to the front. I say hell ya try some thing differnt all these bikes follow the same formula one reason i got 08 1125R but now im almost wishing i would of waited just a little longer. as far as looks go the bikes are starting to look funny but if you are going to change every 2 years its bound to happen

I picked mine up last week... all the hype is right. V twin at the bottom inline four at the top. Amazing. Definitely living up to the hype in my opinion.
D. Rawls AKA D-SON -2009 Yamaha YZF R1000 THE R1  January 6, 2009 11:32 AM
I can't wait until the new R1 hit the streets. A lot of readers are biases towards the Yamaha R1. For years all you hear about is the GSXR1000. I know The GSXR1000 is only good for AMA super bike. but now that Spies is gone, what now? On the world super bike and Moto GP level Ducati and Yamaha are stright running things with Honda in a close third and have been for the past two to three years. Even when the 2007 - 2008 R1 was "not up to speed" We were competitive in every form of racing excpt. AMA. I think the new R1 will be The bike to beat. It inherits the crossplane crankshaft technology developed from the world championship-winning yamaha M1. Each crank pin is positioned 90-degrees from the next, resulting in an uneven firing order of 270-180-90-180, giving the new R1 a claim as the first production motorcycle with this. To me that will be useable HP to the ground. The R1 my not be the bike for a drag racers but it is the bike for a true V.I.R. track day rider or racer and has been for years. Lets see what you have to say this year. The new 2009 GSX R1000 looks good, but lets see what the hard numbers say. My money will be on the NEW BIKE OF THE YEAR THE YAMAHA YZF R1000. THE R1.

B -Sounds goods - when's the first ride?  January 2, 2009 10:51 AM
Looks good. Can't wait to read you're first ride impressions.
Rick in VA -sound  January 1, 2009 08:19 PM
I think that sound is great. I had heard the 'big-bang' vs. 'screamer' arguments, but this little video put it to reality. I'd like to see/hear it in person of course... maybe soon. Not that I'm in the market for a liter sportbike, but a guy can dream. It's nice to see Yamaha doing it a little different.
Hutchy -Cross-eyed pig?  December 30, 2008 12:39 PM
Cross-eyed pig is a dang funny description that's for sure. I will wait until I see the bike inperson and until I ride it before I pass judgement though. Should be a great year fro superbikes.
kevin davis -But why so ugly?  December 30, 2008 09:56 AM
Born from MotoGP? Then why is it so ugly? What's with this new Japanese trend of making these insanely ugly bikes? Ducati's 1098 proved to be quite an effect motorcycle so that proves bikes don't have to be ugly to work. This is sad to me cause the R1's have always been great looking bikes. Now it looks like a cross-eyed pig. The whole cross-plane crank doesn't excite me because if I wanted to ride a twin I'd buy a twin. ditto with the sound I don't like the sound of the "big bang" bike. I prefer the wail of the screamer motors Also I think this micro-seat thing is stupid. hated the pedrosa RC212v when it had it. The 08 CBR 1000 also. The new Aprilia would be great if it didn't have that stupid seat. Saw if you haven't guessed I' don't like the R1's seat either. Before anyone says it yes I guess I'm a poser. I do lots of track day but don't race, so looks play a large part of what interests me in a motorcycle. It can't look good and run like crap, but again Ducati has shown you can have both as has Yamaha with the 04-06 R1. The economy isn't why I'm not getting a new bike. It's because most of them are so ugly I have no interest in them. I'd get a Ducati but I really don't want to ride a twin
