Spies Has Perfected the Art of Timing

Tuesday, September 08, 2009
Ben Spies has immense talent on the racetrack, of that there is no doubt. The young Texan has also proved wise in making career decisions:

Spies title hopes are looking mighty good now with 12 wins in his pocket and an 18-point lead over Haga.
Ben Spies' career has numerous highlights already and the young Texan is on the verge of even more.
First, he jumped from AMA Superbike, back when it was called AMA Superbike. Having become Mladin’s nemesis and besting his teammate/rival in three consecutive seasons, it was time to move on and he did. Had he stayed on another year to watch American road racing devolve… it would certainly have been wasted.

Second, Spies opted for World Superbike instead of MotoGP. It was long expected that Spies would move to MotoGP next, presumably with Suzuki. In fact, I interviewed Spies a couple years back and he specifically said he had no interest in ever racing World Superbike. But look how well it’s turned out. Spies has stepped into the championship vacuum created by Troy Bayliss and appears poised for a possible title in his rookie season. With 12 wins, so far, Spies is dominating much like his AMA days and doing it on a new machine, the cross-plane Yamaha R1. Clearly, Spies is doing better on the Yamaha in SBK than he would be doing on the GSV-R in MotoGP, where veteran Loris Capirossi and Chris Vermeulen have struggled.

Third, Spies has opted to stick with Yamaha for another year in WSB and then bolt to GP in 2011. The consequences of this decision are yet to play out, but it would seem that Spies has aligned himself with the most competitive mount in MotoGP – at least in the hands of the ultra-talented Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo. But will delaying GP by a year effectively remove him from MotoGP contention another season, as he will campaign aboard the Tech 3 satellite squad his rookie GP season?

It would seem Ben knows what he’s doing, making wise moves at the best time. And looking at the future, there is a real possibility that the American will enter the 2011 season with five consecutive championships to his credit!

I think the promising thing spies has showed is rapid adaptation as well as dominance. There's no saying how well he'll do in GP, since they're are so many variables. But there were a lot of variables from ama to wsbk and he's thwarted them all.
kc -spies replacing who ? September 9, 2009 10:15 AM
If you think Spies could possibly replaced the G.O.A.T then you really don't understand the BUSINESS of racing. It is a business first and foremost. There is also a lot of up and coming riders in the 125 and 250 classes that have just a good a shot as Spies does. I like to root for the American as well, but let's not forget that MOTOGP is worldwide.

Didn't he also make the move from Formula Extreme to Superbike right before they dropped from 1000cc to 600cc. I think he was the last "true" formula extreme champion. But i might be wrong

I don't know if he will stay with Yamaha when he gets to GP but he seems to have a bright future in road racing. It's gotta be great to race motorcycles and make big cheddar for a living.... I'm jealous.
NorCalFilth -YOU GUYS ARE NUTS- Dan the Canadian - Tech 3 !!!!!!!!!!!!1 - Chris - Completely agree- September 8, 2009 03:10 PM
Guys, i love the enthusiasm, but lets not let a good story get in the way of the facts. ALL ROOKIES IN MOTO GP MUST GO TO A NON FACTORY TEAM. At least that is my understanding. Due to his new contract his only option is a Tech 3 ride. I love the rooting for an American but do you really think Lozo or Rossi will take a backseat to Spies? You need to get your heads looked at if you think that this is a real option. The Fiat Yamaha will NOT have Spies aboard untill 2012 or beyond. Rossi to Ducati is a romantic thought, tho i dont think that you will see Spies sending Rossi packing.

Just think about it......
If he wins this years title, then next year again, will he really end up at Tech 3 satellite team..... Don`t think so....
Either Lorenzo or Rossi will leave the team, or he will make the move to a competitive team, like ? Honda or Ducati.
Hey, Hayen could take his place at WSBK and he could got to Ducati.
Suzuki has not improve in performance wise in the last 2 years, why should it get better.........

I really like this guy........... He`s not the Futur, the Futur is him...

His timing and decisions have been brilliant. With rumors of Rossi being courted by Ducati for 2011 (he is under contract with Yamaha thru 2010) a jump from WSBK to GP for Spies (perhaps to replace Rossi!!!???) would make for one of the most exciting GP's I could imagine :)
