Danny Eslick had no troubles with his Buell 1125R at Fontana, with the rising star delivering the American marque its first-ever Daytona SportBike victory.
Danny Eslick swept the AMA Daytona SportBike double-header at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, March 20-21, winning both rounds of the weekend aboard his Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing/RMR Buell 1125R in dramatically different fashion to achieve his first career AMA Pro Racing wins. The victories were also the first in AMA Pro Racing competition for the Buell 1125R.

In Saturday’s Race 1, Eslick jumped out to the lead on the first lap, and as Team M4 Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas, Monster Energy/Attack Kawasaki’s Jamie Hacking, Team M4 Suzuki’s Jason DiSalvo and Erion Honda’s Jake Zemke engaged in a dogfight for the second and third steps on the podium behind him, he broke away for a commanding wire-to-wire victory.

The 22-year-old Broken Arrow, Okla., rider lead by more than seven seconds at one point before backing down on the final lap to take a celebratory wheelie across the start-finish stripe. His victory margin was 2.5 seconds over second place Hacking. Eslick also recorded the fast lap of the race, a 1:27.832.

“I got a good start and broke away from those guys,” said Eslick. “They were battling each other back there and I had sort of a lonely race up front. I just kept my head down and kept watching my lap timer. The Buell 1125R was awesome.”

Eslick again charged to the front and lead every lap of Sunday’s Race 2, but had a much tougher fight on his hands from Hacking. After an early three-lap caution period, Eslick reassumed the lead on the restart and built a small gap, and by the time Hacking worked his way up from fourth past Erion Honda’s Jake Zemke and Graves Yamaha’s Josh Herrin into second on Lap 13, Eslick had jumped out to a 2-second lead. But Hacking clawed his way back into contention, closing the gap to just 0.151 second by Lap 19 and setting up a battle to the checkered flag as the pair broke away from the rest of the field. At the stripe, Eslick bested the veteran factory rider by less than a tenth of a second. Team M4 Suzuki’s Jason DiSalvo made a late-race charge to nip teammate Martin Cardenas by a photo-finish margin of 0.031 second for third place. The gap from Hacking to DiSalvo was eight seconds.

“I got the holeshot and I built a little bit of a gap, but then Jamie was all over me. He never really showed me a wheel, and I kept waiting for a big move from him but it never happened,” Eslick said. “It was an awesome weekend and it was just spectacular to get my first two [AMA Pro Racing] wins.”

Eslick is riding a two-race winning streak in Daytona SportBike - Fontana.

“We are so honored to have this great Bruce Rossmeyer/RMR/GEICO team and a rider like Danny Eslick,” said Erik Buell, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer of Buell Motorcycle Company. “Danny is exploring all the differences of the Buell, like ZTL brakes and fuel in the frame, and he likes what he’s finding. AMA Pro Racing’s new Daytona SportBike class is great competition, with six brands finishing in the top ten. It’s going to be an incredible season to watch motorcycle racing in America, and best of all to watch an American sportbike finally battling for wins.”

Gr1z - Buell vs. the world  March 30, 2009 11:27 AM
I know Eslick may be a better, more experienced rider than Davies, but The Aprilia couldn't keep up with the "little 6's" in the race. May be setup, may be rider, but Aprilia is a proven winner in other series around the world and they were back in the pack. There will be some performance "modifications" as a result of this win but let Buell and Danny have their moment!
Vivek - This is a sad day indeed  March 29, 2009 06:48 PM
What a shame DMG! What a shame! .... American road racing is going straight down the toilet thanks to you... Almost makes me feel like moving to Europe!
Gunthert - Duh! Big Picture  March 26, 2009 09:56 AM
We all know this. That's why we are pissed off because we see our sport going into the NASBIKE toilet. Numerous comments including mine have been referring DMG to NASCAR and Buell to Harley on a number of different message boards on this and other websites. But the big picture won’t work because motorcycle road racing is NOT like NASCAR (which is why me and the other fans like it so much) and because the Harley crowd don’t get road racing, not even when Harley used to race in AMA superbike. The real big picture is DMG is clueless to what motorcycle racing is and what the fans really want because they are blinded by ignorance and greed.
The Big Picture - DMG NASCAR  March 26, 2009 03:50 AM
You guys don't get the big picture. As lame as it is, and I'm no big fan of it either. DMG motorsports is trying to do to moto racing what it has done in NASCAR. (Their fan base is the largest, loyalist, zombie type buy anything with a NASCAR label on it demographic.) They want the American Harley cowd to buy into this. They are the same demographic that is in NASCAR. They spend there money on a "life-style" and "label". More chrome over performance... Tapping into this main stream cash flow is all that matters to them. Hence, Harley is given the edge... and the win. It's all about money, not racing.
BRKNtibia - American?  March 25, 2009 02:07 PM
Pretty much what everyone else said..what a joke. If that thing actually still had an HD engine I could see having some sympathy and letting use whatever size engine they wanted. But the truth is that engine is designed in built by Rotax in Austria. I like how Buell's website calls it a Buell Helicon engine. Lame.
Socalmoe - BS  March 25, 2009 10:53 AM
Hollow Victory, thank goodness for Moto GP. I was at Fontana, it look more like follow the leader than a competitive race, SHAME!!!!!
Steve - DMG  March 25, 2009 10:00 AM
Just one thing to say: DMG organizers are imbaciles. I generally don't agree with things like sport figures acting like spoiled brats, but everything that took place last weekend in Fontana ( racers like mladin not showing up at the mandatory autograph session) not to mention a few more incidents, I really don't blame them. As a fan, having to wait a week to find out the outcome of a race because you want to watch it on TV is absolutely ridiculous! This whole series is a mockery! I am thinking of boycotting this series but feel bad for the riders I a whole lot of respect for. It cost me 110 dollars last week to go and watch stupidities like a 1200cc bike racing against 600cc. I don't wantto take anything away from Eslick but where was he when there were only 600cc machines. Hacking fought his way to the front every weekend to finally get this? What a joke!
Gunthert - Buell, Seriously  March 25, 2009 09:58 AM
Attention Erik Buell or any Buell staff who may read MUSA message boards: You must realize that the more races the 1125 wins against 599cc super stock bikes will only hurt your brand image even more than if you never showed up to race. Stick to the MOTO ST series, there you race against other big bore twins or at the very least just try to run in the superbike class. The rules have changed and other big twins like Larry Pegram and his Ducati 1098R are competitive. Otherwise stay home because these press releases bragging about beating up privateer teams on little 599cc bikes makes me feel embarrassed for all Buell owners.
Delta425 - Buell  March 25, 2009 09:41 AM
I'm with SITW; everyone should just boycott the DMG race series. NASCAR morons running motorcycle racing! What a joke/nightmare. World Superbike is real racing!
Superlight - Buell 1125R  March 25, 2009 06:43 AM
Putting together a racing series with differing cylinder counts and technologies was always going to be difficult, but the inclusion of the 1125R (and Aprilia RSV 1000) with the Japanese 600s is "over the top". All DMG had to do was look at the racing history in World Superbike, where it has been shown time and again that equal-technology twins need about 20% more displacement than an equivalent technology four to be competitive, not twice the displacement as with the Buells. I feel badly for Danny Eslick and the Motor Company, who now find their successes besmirched by this controversy.
The Canadian Dan - KTM ????????????  March 25, 2009 04:55 AM
Same thing for KTM RC-8R....... Where are they......
JW - Where are the Ducatis?  March 25, 2009 04:19 AM
Why not have 1098s in there too? they are the same displacement, watercooled v-twins...oh right...not american...LAME!
Frank - Horsepower  March 24, 2009 09:36 PM
From the tests in BIKE(UK) magazine it appears the Buell might have a twenty or so hp advantage over a 600.
SITW - Stacked Deck  March 24, 2009 06:36 PM
They do the same thing in drag racing. What a joke. Why bother even following the series . . .
Jake - Of course they should win!  March 24, 2009 06:01 PM
Can anyone tell me why a 1125cc liquid cooled, overhead cam twin is running in this class? I can see maybe the 848 Ducati but this is a ludicrous. Hey DMG... nobody will notice how you stacked the deck in favor of the American manufacturer. LOL
