Dungey and Fiolek Nominated for ESPY
Tuesday, June 29, 2010
Two motocross stars, Ryan Dungey and Ashley Fiolek, are nominated for recognition at this year’s ESPY Awards. The duo will compete in the Best Action Sports Athlete categories, which are broken out into separate male and female groups.
Motocross stars Ryan Dungey and Ashley Fiolek (pictured) are both up for 2010 ESPY awards in Best Action Sports Athlete categories.
The reigning Supercross
champion and current Motocross
points leader, Dungey faces some stiff competition against the likes of freestyle skier Bobby Brown, surfer Mick Fanning, BMW rider Garrett Reynolds and snowboarder Shaun White. The uber-popular White has won the Best Male Action Sports Athlete ESPY three times out of the six years it’s been around, and the red-headed snowboarding guru is fresh off his dominating Winter Olympic performance.
Should Dungey pull off the upset, he will be only the second motorcycle star to snag the award, with Travis Pastrana winning the award in 2007.
Fiolek squares off against another snowboarding star in Torah Bright, along with freestyle skiers Jen Hudak and Ashliegh McIvor, as well as surfer Stepanie Gilmore. Fiolek currently defends the Women’s Motocross Championship
, ruling the 2009 series with 10 wins. The WMX star is the first female motocross rider to get nominated for the Best Female Action Sports Athlete category. Fiolek has been featured in the pages of ESPN The Magazine, with a story showcasing the young stars success in spite of her profound deafness. (Read the full article on Fiolek at ESPN
