YikeBike Electric Scooter

And now for something completely different… We spotted the YikeBike in the press gallery of the INTERMOT bike show last month. The electric powered ride’s isn’t all that new, having made its debut last year and currently being sold in the UK and other European nations. However, the nifty design from New Zealand’s Grant Ryan was news to us, and it’s an interesting urban mobility option.

The foldable, compact carbon fiber design weighs in at just 22 pounds. A brushless DC motor propels the YikeBike, with a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery delivering a 6.2-mile range and top speed of 25 km/h (15.5 mph). Not that riders would want to go too fast, as the riding position is akin to perching on the handlebars of your brother’s 10-speed.
And fat folks need not apply, with the 100 kg (220-pound) weight limit. Though watching The Biggest Loser cast in a YikeBike gymkhana sounds like must-see TV! Consider the idea freely pitched Hollywood – run with it.
