The Final Word

2009 Suzuki RM-Z450
The entire crop of Japanese MXers is flying high this season. Watching the reactions of our testesrs, howerver, proves there is one that stands above the rest.
While all of these bikes are amazing pieces of MX engineering, when it comes to picking what bike is best for you, well, like anything that depends on what you are looking for.

Suzuki has refined the FI bugs and proved the machine it came to market with late last year is a force to be reckoned with. It’s a solid pick, but unfortunately doesn’t stand out as exceptional in any one area. In a group like this, exceptional is exactly what is needed to run at the front of the pack. For this reason, Suzuki is bringing up the rear in a very close fourth.

The Yamaha, while not having the most powerful engine or sharpest chassis, is an easy, stable and forgiving bike to ride, lending itself well to those who are less experienced. For this reason, those who are not after outright lap times and want something easy and fun to ride for longer days at the track should look no further. One thing is for sure: Yamaha’s updated ’09 YZ450F was universally loved among the slower riders. For this, we give it the Easy To Ride Award, as well as third in our hotly contested shootout.

2009 Kawasaki KX450F
The Kawasaki will be showing this side to plenty of competitors in 2009.
The Big Red Machine also known as Honda isn’t the kind of company to release a totally new motorcycle and not aim for the top. Thus, it was no surprise that the CRF450R impressed in many areas. It’s the lightest on the scales, which is felt while riding; its size is very compact and easy to maneuver for all level riders; plus the engine is only second to the monster Kawasaki in terms of outright power. Our only complaint? It was tough to set up and its size caters to smaller riders. For this reason, the all-new Honda comes in a close second.

If you’re looking for a fast lap, clearly the Kawasaki is the choice for you. In fact, the Kawasaki is for just about anyone. Massively changed from ’08, almost everything for the ’09 model year is new and definitely improved. Where the old bike was big and sluggish, the new machine turns on a dime and navigates though ruts like it’s on autopilot. But first and foremost, the engine sitting in between those green plastic shrouds is off the charts. Power is the highest we’ve ever seen, and due to its extremely precise fuel-injection, is easy to use no matter one’s skill set. This all adds up to an unbeatable combination. Say hello to our 2009 450 Motocross Shootout Winner: Kawasaki’s KX450F.

Kristian - Crf shock  May 31, 2009 05:47 AM
I own a 09 crf. the shock is so bad stock that I can't believe it! except for that I love the bike.... But DEFINETLY needs suspension work.... man the shock is bad, forks is a bit soft...

We, in South Africa, have problems with supply of parts. I have 3 bikes and recently purchased another. 2002 YZ426, 2004 300EXC, 2008 KLX450R and a 2008 YZ250F. The KTM's maintenance is of the charts compared to the others. The YZ426 cannot really be brought into contention due to its age and the engine parts are getting scarce, but are still available freely. The KLX450R has a real plush ride and the only problem is that the bike struggles to start with the electric starter due to a low amperage/h battery, but i'll live with it. We recently did the valves and that was after 9800km. Not bad i'd say. This bike has been abused to no end and is still running strong. The YZ250F is my favourite when it comes to very technical riding due to its low weight. The bike is still stock standard and I really cannot fault it in any way. The main thing is what you do with your bike and what your part availability is like. In South Africa we get the best support from Kawa and Yamaha thats why I chose them. I ordered the New KX450F and will sell both the YZ426 and 300EXC to buy it, but I cant wait. There is so little to choose between all the bikes that it is all about preference & what you can afford. Hans Nabuurs - YZ450F worlds best.  March 9, 2009 08:35 AM
The YZ450F is the best bike when you adjust everything right it's very good, look at Stefan Everts riding style copy it and you will love it and it's the most reliable bike.
KX450f - comparison  February 17, 2009 12:12 AM
I feel the Kawi's have the best overall bikes. Honda 2nd. KTM 3rd Yamaha 4th and Suzuki 5th.
beau THE MAN - kxf fan  February 9, 2009 07:13 PM
Magazines are also saying that the 09 kx450f has the most power ever seen to date and its "OFF THE CHARTS" thats pretty impressive i'd say
Pablo76 - KTM Best for Race/FreeStyle MX or Serious Riders...  February 5, 2009 05:26 PM
In my Opinion I wish I'd bought another KTM and NOT the CRF450, as my old KTM was used by a racer friend of mine before I bought it from him (sxf450 2007) he says its putting out about 53-55hp and I believe him. Wish I could have his new KTM tho, its a brand new 450sx-f and running approx 57-59hp and he paid approx $5000 just for his Procircuit works front forks (SHOWA). Thats way out of my league and I couldn't get the best out them anyway.
HONDA - CRF450  January 7, 2009 06:39 PM
Honda is the best and always will be we are more up to date with fuel injection and sick new exhaust why the kxf honda was truely the best no questions hands down.
kevin - real life  December 28, 2008 09:47 PM
reality is that the kawasaki is the best performer but durability sucks yamaha has best durability but is to slow honda has good durability, but to small, everyone is 6'1 190 lbs on average suzuki is whatever. they are set to win in specific areas but none of them is well rounded to the average non racer the best bike is the 2007 to 2008 crf 450 anyone disagree???????????? btw durability should be included in these tests, its most important to me.
jacques - honda fan  December 27, 2008 08:58 AM
The crf has more hp then the kx and its lighter how can it be slower and down on power?
Dave - Where is KTM?  December 17, 2008 07:09 AM
Why didn't you include the KTM 450 SX-F or the KTM 505 SX-F?
Max - Lap times please  December 10, 2008 07:39 AM
The lap times done by the different riders on the different bikes would be very appreciated. I still can't believe the KX is faster than the CRF. It seems that what the Honda lacks on low end is compensated on top end and over-rev. An experienced driver would benefit from this even more and taking into account the Honda is a good 13lbs lighter I can't see how it can be noticeable slower. My 2 cents, Max
Tyler Dorris - Awsome  December 5, 2008 10:09 AM
Chad you was awsome. You are my FAVORITE ride.
Steve Dahlstrom - What about KTM?  December 4, 2008 05:14 PM
MXA rated the Kawasaki first and the KTM second for 2009. You guys did not include it. Why not? I personally feel it should be number one just because of the electric start. All bikes need suspension work! The Kawasaki has a problem transmission that can't be fixed!
chris - yamaha  November 30, 2008 07:37 PM
when will the yz 450f have fuel injection? 2010?
Honda - cr500  November 27, 2008 01:26 PM
noneone can beat cr500
Drake - Great Job  November 25, 2008 12:31 PM
Great videos! You guys manage to up the bar every year.
Pete P - Noise?  November 25, 2008 10:15 AM
Which one is quietest? Still the Yamaha? Lower noise standards are coming. 96db for MX and 94db (!!) for off-road. Do these bikes measure up?
