.
Although the engine was sublime when it ran well - it often didn’t!
1000cc and 42 hp is what the 1958 Square 4G produced.
Sophistication and elegance from riding the Ariel.
The two rear cylinders have very little exposed cooling area.
The sales tagline was "Ten miles to a hundred miles an hour, in top gear."
The Square 4G is all snarls, vibration and coarse power but still gentle.
The engine was small and light enough to fit straight into existing single cylinder chassis.
The Ariel Square 4's odd rear suspension was delicate and required far too much maintenance.
Dubbed the "Squariel" for it's 90 degree firing order.
The Square 4G is an admirable example of practical engineering.
"It needs be ridden thoughtfully and with respect for its handling limitations.”
In it's time, the Square 4G was iconic for it's four exhaust pipes.
"nothing gives such an imperial riding experience as the 4G."
Ariel produced only 15,000 of these fine examples of a British motorcycle.
Square 4G was drawn by Edward Turner and redesigned by Ariel.
