Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Commences
Monday, August 8, 2011
Greetings all, I just returned from the mother of all motorcycle rallies: Sturgis. Having experienced my fair share of cruiser-focused bike gatherings, i.e. Daytona Bike Week, I was rather skeptical in regards to the outright entertainment quotient since I’m not super into the hardcore cruiser scene. But after a few days of riding Harley-Davidsons
to and around South Dakota I have a greater appreciation for not only Sturgis but all cruiser-style bike meets. Obviously there is no shortage of things to do but if you’re heading into town this week you simply MUST check out Buffalo Chip.
Buffalo Chips is a private 500-plus acre campground within a few mile radius of Sturgis. Think a bike-friendly Woodstock or Coachella. There it hosts a gigantic (yet very organized) raging party for the duration of the two week event. Each night there are different big name music acts (last night Alice Cooper rocked the house and even though I don’t dig his music, he’s definitely a impressive showman!) and a slew of other activities from firing machine guns (I’m not joking) to zip lining, midget bowling and of course tipping back some suds and partying. And the best part is that since you’re on private property the cops aren’t allowed inside so it’s almost impossible to get in trouble. Rest assured though Buffalo Chip has its own security force (they have machine guns, remember?) not to mention its own fresh water, septic system, bars, restaurants, laundry service and pretty much anything else you’d need to make yourself safe and comfortable for the duration of your stay.
Another cool thing is that the owner, Rod and his staff are actually really into the event (find out more about him in the Rod Woodruff Interview- Buffalo Chip Turns 30
). They genuinely enjoy hosting one of the biggest biker bashes in the world and take pride in making sure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time. If you’re planning on hitting Sturgis 2011
this week make sure you check them out.
