Saxon Motorcycles, producers of production bikes in the vein of Big Dog and Big Bear Choppers, got into the game a bit late in 2004. With the goal of making similarly styled bikes at a more competitive price point, Saxon had the bad fortune to throw their hat in the ring just as the popularity of these types of motorcycles was waning. Due to a series of setbacks, including complaints about customer service and problematic warranties, the company only survived a few years before going on the seller’s block.
Late in 2009, Mark Borodkin and Tim Gueltzow acquired the company. The pair went into the acquisition with good intentions, opening up a 40,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Gilbert, Arizona. With the American market for these types of motorcycles virtually dried up, Saxon sought to establish a bigger presence in the international market, especially Europe where over-the-top production choppers are still in demand. The company was able to establish dealerships in Belgium, Fance, Germany, Portugal, Denmark, the Netherlands, Russia and a few other countries. Unfortunately, it’s hard to overcome the bad reputation of predecessors as long as you’re flying under the same company name and Saxon hasn’t been able to overcome the problems that plagued it in the past.
Think you’ve got what it takes to turn around the misfortunes of an ailing motorcycle manufacturer? Want to be CEO of your own company? Then contact Borodkin at the email address above. If they can’t find a life line soon, add Saxon Motorcycles to the extinction list containing American IronHorse, Big Dog Motorcycles and Big Bear Choppers.
