Despres Talks Yamaha and Dakar 2014
Friday, November 22, 2013
The 2014 Dakar Rally is going to be an important one for Cyril Despres. The five-time Dakar champion contests the event aboard a new mount (Yamaha) for the first time since stepping away from a long and successful relationship with KTM. A win in 2014 would tie Despres with fellow countryman and the all-time Dakar win record holder, Stephane Peterhansel. It would also give Despres his third-straight Dakar victory, a record that hasn’t been achieved since Peterhansel took his third-consecutive win in 1993. Yamaha is also the marque that propelled Peterhansel to the top-step six times through the ‘90s and, as becomes apparent in the video below, Despres’ decision to move to Yamaha was influenced in part by Peterhansel’s suggestion. Then there’s the fact that Yamaha hasn’t won a Dakar since
Peterhansel’s final victory in 1998.
No pressure, right?
Check out the video below and see Despres talk about his move to Yamaha, how he’s getting along with the new bike and more.
