Honda's Road to Dakar Comic Part II
Monday, March 3, 2014
Honda continues its graphic novel narration of the Japanese marque’s return to the Dakar Rally
with the release of Part 2. The HRC squad contested the latest Dakar with a five-rider effort, led by Helder Rodrigues and Joan Barreda who would finish a respective fifth and seventh overall
. However, the HRC squad notched several stage wins and would have been in the running for a podium position if not for some costly navigation errors.
But Honda’s comic book treatment doesn’t focus on the riders, at least not yet. Instead Big Red showcases the development work for its CRF450 Rally bike. The engineering team competes in the R&D process, whittling down 15 engineers to four for the final Dakar project. Language barriers, fuel consumption gremlins, dawn-‘til-dusk testing and development – the team fights…
Ok, granted, it does sound a little corny explaining the character arc in the latest installment. But this author finds the Dakar comic book project a cool insight to Honda’s corporate culture. There’s no hint of irony/smarm that would likely accompany a similar treatment in an American corporate marketing ploy. It earnestly demonstrates the high value Honda places on engineering – they are literally treated as heroic figures worthy of recognition.
