Bonhams Banbury Run Auction a Success

Tuesday, June 21, 2011
Bonhams third annual sale of collectors’ motorcycles on 18th June, held in conjunction with the VMCC’s Banbury Run at Bonhams Midlands base in Kidlington, Oxfordshire was a resounding success with a total of £427,500 and 85% sold.

Anzani 8 valve 1098xx v-twin engine
Anzani 1098cc 8-valve v-twin engine sold for a better price than previously estimated.
The Banbury Run is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious gatherings of Vintage motorcycles, but unusually it was an item in the memorabilia and spares section of the sale that provided the highest price of the day. A rare Anzani 1,098cc 8-valve v-twin engine far exceeded its pre-sale estimate of £10,000-15,000 to sell for £45,600.

There has been increasing interest in the BMW marque in recent years and two of the four twin-cylinder models in the sale achieved particularly good results: the 1938 597cc R66 in need of restoration fetched £12,075 while the circa 1937 494cc R5 in similar condition made £10,350. Both exceeded their top estimate, which bodes well for Bonhams’ sale at the BMW Museum, Munich to be held in October 2011.

As always, the Vincent marque proved popular and a circa 1950 Vincent 998cc Black Shadow/Rapide sold for £31,050. A 1952 Vincent 499cc Comet made £10,350 and a 1949 Vincent-HRD 500cc Meteor fetched £11,500.

Other noteworthy results include the two-owner 1966 Velocette 499cc Thruxton, which sold for £18,400, and the unrestored circa 1919 Triumph 550cc Model H that found a new home for £7,475, both comfortably above top estimate.

Ben Walker, Head of Bonhams Collectors’ Motorcycle Department, comments,

“We are really pleased with another super sale in association with the VMCC Banbury Run. There was fantastic attendance on the day and we’re particularly pleased with the great price made for the very rare Anzani 1,098cc 8-valve v-twin engine.”
