I spent a couple days in the hospital right before Christmas and the medical field was somewhat confused. Apparently my symptoms didn’t quite match what the CAT scans and X-rays were saying. After much ado about diddly-squat, I was sent home and told to take it easy for a week – so much for our highly paid medical professionals. During the down time I was able to do some soul searching and get in tune with the old body and mind.

I don’t know many people, none actually, who would intentionally head out in drizzly and snowy weather to play around on wet rocks with a two-stroke dirt bike as part of their “training regimen.” You’d have to be some kind of masochist to get off on that stuff. It makes sense then that the top extreme enduro rider of 2011 would spend his time honing skills in the nastiest conditions on the nastiest obstacles.

Racing across 100 miles of desert terrain sounds like a great way to spend an April day. The Stumpjumpers motorcycle club hosts its annual Desert 100 each spring in Odessa, Washington, and has come to be known for its massive bomb start which sees up to a thousand riders streaking across the open terrain. Next year it will be held on March 31 – April 1.
