2011 Adventure Touring Shootout Begins

The Triumph Tiger 800 XC is getting thrown in with the big boys to see how it stacks up.
The logistics are finalized as much as they can be for our major Adventure Touring Shootout. We’re heading out tomorrow to get started on this iron-butt undertaking. We’ve rounded up five bikes and will ride them thousands of miles to determine the ultimate long-distance, multi-use motorcycle.
Everyone is wondering how the new Yamaha Super Tenere will stack up. KTM jumped at the chance to prove its 990 Adventure. Ducati has its superbike-powered Multistrada 1200 that kills the performance testing. Of course, BMW’s R1200GS is an iconic ADV stalwart. The 800-class is growing as well and there’s a common argument that midsize bikes are all anyone really needs. We’ll put that theory to the test by running the new Triumph Tiger 800 XC alongside the big dogs. Each of the bikes are loaded with factory installed touring goodies.
We’ll be crossing through at least six states, taking photos and video documentary. The route is mildly charted. Not exactly drifting wherever the wind takes us, but with plenty of room for on-the-fly audibles. Ultimately we’ll wind up in Big Sky, Montana to witness the Big Sky XC race on the ski slopes. Our riders include MotoUSA staffers and a pair of grizzled adventure veterans who do this stuff full-time. Be sure to keep an eye on our blogs and video pages for updates along the way. Once we get home and wash away nearly two weeks of travel grime we’ll put together the comprehensive test results.
