One-Day Riding Season
Saturday, November 5, 2011
It rained yesterday for the first time in several weeks and the forecast is calling for snow over the weekend. Our riding season is officially one day long, and I wasn’t about to miss it.
Aside from a travel assignment, it’s rare that I get to ride dirt bikes during the week. It’s also pretty rare that I don’t have any test bikes in the garage, but that unfortunate situation coincided with the single chance to hit primo dirt. I wasted no time pulling out the girlfriend’s YZ250F as a backup and my buddy and I headed for the hills. The first stop was to check out how this weekend’s XC course was shaping up with the volunteers from the Motorcycle Riders Association
. We did a few test runs and then headed off for a couple hours of awesome riding.
Unfortunately, over the course of the last few rides, the YZ has hit the deck a few times and the carbon fiber DRD exhaust
got tweaked. The mounting bracket vibrated and bounced enough for the rubber grommet to pop out and the pipe leaned in just a bit more under the fender. Matched with the wider rear tire I installed last time and the DRD won’t be passing sound tech this weekend, or ever. It was an expensive mistake, but the dirt was moist, the arm pump wasn’t bad and I didn’t blow my one-day riding season.
