Does Motocross Need Stewart and Villopoto?

Mike Alessi took the overall win in the 450 class - AMA Motocross Hangtown
Finally, more than one person has a real shot at winning.
No James Stewart and no Ryan Villopoto – what have our outdoor Nationals come to!?! Is it even possible to have a good series without these guys? They are the stars of our sport, the most influential riding technicians, tacticians and ass-kickians.

Without them Mike Alessi actually won an overall. That blows my mind. I’ve become so accustomed to seeing Holeshot Mikey blast to the front and then get mowed down it barely even registers anymore. The guy isn’t my favorite rider, but he definitely works his tail off, bounces back time and time again after defeat and this is what happens. He was right in the thick of a championship battle a couple years ago when circumstance threw the series wide open late in the game. He’s my pick for the title this year. And frankly, for once, I think he will deserve it.

How about Rockstar Makita Suzuki teammate Chad Reed? Good to see him back outdoors, I guess... Watching that guy hem and haw until Stewart bowed out before committing reminded me of the annual pussyfoot in the Supercross Lites class - decide which coast will be the hardest and then go the other way. However, Reed’s still a big name, a big draw and a big threat for the title.

Ryan Villopoto did not ride the second moto due to injury - AMA Motocross Hangtown
It's a big hole on the starting gate without this bike in the lineup.
Ivan Tedesco is rocking so far. He seems to do this every year with spurts of speed and then crash his way out of contention. Maybe he or any of the other Red Bull Honda riders will see the golden opportunity before them and step up. Andrew Short would be a prime candidate.

Not only is this a great opportunity for the racers, but for fans, sponsors and the young series promoters. Motocross racing is always better when there isn’t a single guy slaughtering everyone. Guys are going to be hanging it all out for this once-in-a-lifetime chance to run the tables without the big dogs hanging around. It’s a free-for-all right now to see who will emerge as the temporary alpha male. So does motocross need Stew and RV Park? It's one of those glass half-empty/half-full things.

JC -Alessi's Broken Dreams June 10, 2009 10:08 AM
You are right, Leslie. Alessi did break his patella and underwent surgery. Not sure exactly how it happened, but his championship run is over. http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/558/3681/Motorcycle-Article/AMA-Motocross-Leader-Mike-Alessi-Injured.aspx
Leslie D'Amico -Alessi to win championship? June 9, 2009 05:18 PM
Didn't he just crash... "Cycle News has learned from a reliable source that Mike Alessi suffered a potentially season-ending injury while practicing in Pennsylvania earlier today (Monday). According to the source, Alessi hit a patch of grass that caused his bike to slide into a fence post, splitting his knee cap."

I get ya Tim B.
Tim B -Let Me Clarify June 9, 2009 09:18 AM
I said Reed and Alessi. I didn't mention Tedesco. What I meant is that they're second rate compared to Stewart, and soon to be 450 stud Villopoto. I stick by my statement until they show that they can compete with Stewart. Can Alessi and Reed blow away 99+% of the country? Yes, but this is the pros and right now you have one guy dominating. Heck, Reed wouldn't even enter the outdoors until he found Stewart was sitting out and Reed still can't win. I lose more respect for him all the time.
Fred Star -Second Rate? June 8, 2009 12:03 PM
Champions are fun to watch and fun to root for, HOWEVER...to refer to Tedesco or Alessi as second-rate as Tim B does is ignorant. (IMO) These guys are ungodly fast and as JC says, they work their tail off. They're pros in every sense of the word. I don't care if it's a battle for tenth place, racing is racing and it's a blast to watch. Half the time I don't even pay attention to where Bubba's at, I watch the back of the pack cause that's where the action is.
Tim B -Definitely! June 8, 2009 09:05 AM
Yes, period. Motocross and Supercross needs star riders to attract spectators. Nobody wants to see races being won by second-rate riders like Alessi and Reed.
