How to Crush a Dirt Biker’s Soul
Friday, July 27, 2012
I was riding pretty well there for awhile, or so I thought, and then I bought a used Beta 270. The Rev 3 is a soul crusher hidden beneath sexy Italian skin. The first few rides were especially defeating as the simplest maneuvers somehow escaped my range of motor functions. I’m racking up seat time – well, saddle time - but this two-wheeled genre is still pissing me off. There’s just so much to learn and it doesn’t come overnight.
The good thing about trials riding is that for as quickly as it knocks you down, it builds your confidence to new heights. Obstacles just don’t look as intimidating after learning to fine-tune balance and bike control. The boost that comes with conquering previously unimaginable lines is probably my favorite thing about riding motorcycles. Then I scrap it on something stupid and get reminded that I’m not, in fact, Toni Bou.
There’s a difference between being hot shit, or being a big steamy turd - trials is quick to make the distinction.
