Nissin ABS Defect Prompts Bike Recalls

Tuesday, July 30, 2013
A spate of motorcycle recalls from at least four manufacturers is linked to a potentially defective Nissin ABS unit. Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Triumph have issued recalls for various models sourcing the ABS system. A total of 5766 are affected by the recall notices, including popular models like the redesigned Suzuki Hayabusa and all-new Kawasaki Ninja 300.

The recall notices blame a manufacturing error on the ABS component from Nissin. The OEM Defect Notices describe a misalignment of an inlet valve, which could introduce foreign bodies into the braking fluid and foul the ABS functionality. The Honda and Suzuki notices identify the potential foreign substance as aluminum chips, with Triumph describing aluminum filings. Kawasaki’s recall states dust particles as the potential contaminate interfering with the ABS function.

Honda’s Defect Notice, which affects 235 of the all-new 2014 CTX700, describes the manufacturering error as: “Some ABS modulators installed on affected motorcycles may be contaminated by an aluminum chip that resulted from a manufacturing error. Specifically, a misalignment between the fixture that holds the modulator body and the insertion jig that installed the brake fluid inlet check valve may have caused the check valve to chip the edge of the bore in the body. If an aluminum chip is present and becomes lodged in either the inlet or outlet check valves during brake actuation, the anti-lock functionality likely will not perform properly and the wheel may skid. Unexpected skidding of either the front or rear tire under hard braking increases the risk of a crash.”

The document also includes a diagram outlining the problem:

Consumers will be notified and dealers will replace the suspect ABS unit with a new one.
