Need Ideas for New Moto Garage

Saturday, September 26, 2009

It just takes a little vision... and a lot of work. All you garage monkeys, give me some tips.
Moving into a new house is a ton of work and pretty exciting, but there’s nothing I’m more stoked about than the garage. This one is more than twice as large as the last and it’s like an artist’s blank canvass. With the rest of the house under ongoing construction, the garage is currently filled with a massive pile of crap, but I’m on the verge of making that the top priority. As much as I’d like to go crazy with a Snap-On tool catalog, there’s just no way my budget can handle that kind of abuse.

There’s only one crappy little bench set up currently, which means the first challenge is to yank that out and design a new layout to meet my moto needs. I’ve decided to dedicate a part of it to a full-blown moto wardrobe since I’m starting to get quite the collection of riding gear. Looking for ideas has led me to troll interior design websites for guidance on closet systems and nifty storage techniques – things I can build myself. Unfortunately, if the rest of this remodel is any indication, I’ll be lucky to enjoy a custom garage next riding season much less this one.

Before this thing gets too deep, anybody have any ideas on how to make a badass budget moto garage? I won't be needing any street gizmos, this one's for the dirt crew! What would you guys do?

Space seems to be a repeating theme here. Good call on the wheel casters. Mobility of the benches and tool chests will make it easier to create extra room when needed. I have some mobile work stations, but I hadn’t considered putting all of the benches on wheels. Excellent tip!
Guy -Floor space... September 29, 2009 03:57 AM
Floor space is the most important thing to consider in a shop. Looks like you have a nice high ceiling. In my garage, I took up the first two feet from the ceiling and put cabinets all the way around. Yes you will need a short ladder to get stuff down, but what you want is the floor space underneath. Additionally, make all workbenches, tool cabinets, etc.. have good wheels under them. That way you can move things around and out onto the driveway when necessary to work on things. Lastly, if you use a torch or welder, steer clear of any coating on the garage floor. Most of them are highly flammable. They look cool, especially the speckled ones, but can catch fire if a hot object falls onto it and burn your garage down. Don't ask how I know...

I'm assuming your garage floor is a typical porous concrete slab. I suggest painting or sealing the floor. Power wash the heck out of it and seal it up. This will make is 100X easier to clean!! Otherwise you just start tracking the black floor straight into your new house. Good luck man!

Before you do anything make sure to run all the electrical wires you need. Your walls aren’t finished yet so now is the perfect time to add extra lights and outlets. My first garage only had a couple and it bugged the hell out of me running extension cords all the time. I spent a ton of time and money adding those after the fact. If I ever build my own shop from the ground up I’ll be sure to have more outlets than necessary just because I hate not having them so much.

It's definitely a lot of work. I hope to get everything cleaned out and drywall finished in October, then start construction in Nov. One item I want in there is a wash basin/parts cleaner. An air compressor is definitely on the list too!

Man, you've got a big project ahead of you! The best thing I did for my garage was to put in a good compressor and retractable hose. You can use it for all kinds of tools and just being able to blow out the dirt and dust is a big help.

Garage Sale! :)Then drywall and build a wood work bench. The secret to a good moto garage is SPACE!
