The waterproof Great Basin
Saddlebag securely attaches to most stock motorcycles equipped with both passenger footrest brackets and a rear rack and/or passenger grab bars. It mounts and un-mounts in seconds with a 3-point webbing and cam-lock connection system. Simply attach the rear connection plus two sides, and you’re ready to ride.
True to the Giant Loop “go light, go fast” approach to high performance adventure touring, no racks, mounts, braces or sub-frame modifications are required.
The Great Basin Saddlebag is a comprehensive packing system that includes two interior pannier pods, two integrated 1.5-liter bottle pockets, two contoured stuff sacks and an integrated top case. All of this is contained within the waterproof Bomb Shell cover, constructed of ultra-durable truckers tarp reinforced with Cordura Ballistic cloth. Interior compartments are lined with high-visibility yellow.

Great Basin Saddlebag: Detailed Materials & Construction Notes & Details
- Volume is 50+ liters.
- Waterproof Bomb Shell - 22 oz. vinyl coated polyester (trucker tarp, extremely tough, UV resistant). Not dry bag material, but much more burly. #10, YKK waterproof zipper with double pulls allows partial or total access to interior. Single stitching does not require seam sealing (see Thread below).
- Exterior Pannier Buckets - 1050 Ballistic Cordura on outside of Waterproof Bomb Shell’s lower pannier doubles protection this critical area.
- Base Layer - Heat resistant, grip layer against machine. Sewn through 1/4" closed cell foam, backed with yellow, coated (waterproof) nylon. Pannier area incorporates a rigid plastic stiffener sewn between the foam and grip layer to retain the base shape. The front-to-rear stitching creates a 'hinge effect,' allowing the Saddlebag to 'morph' onto virtually any machine.
- Webbing - 1" Ballistic Cordura webbing attaches bag to passenger footrest brackets. 1" Nylike webbing is used for all compression strapping. All webbing runs continuously through base layer for ultimate structural integrity.
- Buckles - Large aluminum cam-locks (with steel axles) are used for footrest attachments, and smaller versions of the same cam-lock buckles are used on the compression strapping. These buckles are commonly used for white water boating (think raft frame straps) and will not slip when wet.
- Aluminum Ring Harness – 250-pound test solid aluminum (no weld) forms harness on top at the junction of the three rear compression straps.
- Removable Pannier Pods - 1680 waterproof nylon lined with layer of high-visibility yellow waterproof nylon. Easy-to-grab Nylike webbing handle and #10 YKK zippers. Four layers of waterproof material between your gear and the elements!
- Interior Top Case - 1680 waterproof nylon, fully lined with high-visibility yellow waterproof nylon. # 10 YKK zipper is handy when stuffing a sleeping bag into this compartment. All seams are bound with Ballistic Cordura webbing.
- Bottle Compartments - 1680 waterproof nylon, fully lined with high-visibility yellow waterproof nylon. Tough, elastic drawstring, Delrin closure with Delrin pull tab. Two 1" Nylike webbing straps with Delrin ladder lock buckles secure bottle firmly against the base layer at seat height. These compartments also nicely hold a bottle of wine or tequila, as well as 1.5-liter Primus-type fuel bottles. Also, a great place for keeping socks dry.
- Binding - 100% 1050 Ballistic Cordura webbing.
- Tailored Stuff Sacks – High-visibility yellow, coated (waterproof) nylon with drawstrings and Delrin closure. Tailored to fit easily between the pannier pods and top-case area over the bottle compartments.
- Thread - We use two different threads. One is Ballistic Cordura and does not require double stitching. The other is a military-grade product actually expands slightly when moistened, so seam sealing is not required for waterproofing.
- Reflective Tape - Both side-compression strap keepers are finished with reflective tape that will not crack, fade or peel.
