Motorcycles Cash For Clunkers Program Update

Thursday, August 06, 2009
Motorcycle Industry Council
Question: Are motorcycles included in the federal government's "Cash for Clunkers" program?

Answer: Motorcycles were not included in the original clunker program, enacted by Congress as part of a Supplemental Appropriations bill in June. The program was slated to run through October 2009, however, due to its popularity, the appropriated funding has been exhausted. Legislation to provide an additional $2 billion in funding is expected to be voted on and passed in the Senate today to keep the program going. However, the pending funding legislation makes no changes in the existing program and as such, motorcycles will still not be included. No amendments to the existing program were considered, as the addition of any amendments would make it impossible to pass before the upcoming month long recess.

The additional funding legislation will enable the program to continue into September. If there is consideration of a new program after that, MIC will work to get motorcycles included. There are two stand-alone clunker bills pending:

1. Sponsored by Sen. Carey (D-PA) includes motorcycles selling between $7,000 and $20,000 (MIC advocates inclusion of motorcycles selling for less than $7,000 as well).

2. Bill sponsored by Sen. Feinstein (D-CA) does NOT include motorcycles.

When the clunkers program was originally discussed, Congressional staff involved with the legislation told MIC staff that they would not consider motorcycles because they were having enough difficulty getting support for the car program. However, now that the car program has proven so popular, perhaps there will be a push for continuation. If so, it will provide an additional opportunity to advocate for motorcycle inclusion.

Wondering... -Mike you offer such helpful feedback!  November 3, 2009 08:39 AM
We are so glad to have you here to keep us informed and up-to-date on your latest opinions. They are SO valuable. I mean, if we didn't have a crusty, old, HD lover here spouting off opinions we'd NEVER remember what went on in the mind of old fossils. It's like having a living caveman in a jar for us to watch in wonder. *OH! Do you think he'll throw some more poop? It's so fun to watch him throw his own poop.*

Can we stay on topic here instead of getting a riding lecture. I'm pretty sure the post was about the CARS program...

The "Cash for Clunkers" program could really help Harley Davison. Turn in a metric clunker, get a voucher to use as a downpayment on a new HD.
This program should only be used on the purchase on a new 2009 or 2010 HD.
Most jap bikes are worth squat after they're two years old anyway.
This would be a win-win situation for the buyer and Hary Davison.
Lets keep America working!

A lot of jokes and cool one liners float out there about biking. Like ride it like it,s stolen or ride hard and fast to name a couple..I worry because too many of us are destined for a trip to the zipper factory or the morgue..In 63 I started on motorized 2 wheelers and have a lot of miles under my butt.Been down once my fault drunk back 75 and poor judgment to boot..Learned how to body surf at 115mph..Very lucky got by the invincible stage with all my parts intact..Now after forty or so years I lower the odds while increasing my chances so they are always in my favor..Make no mistake you are always at risk when you ride.I can predict almost every move the others drivers using the road will do even before they know..Looking down, fumbling with the phone or radio..expect erratic lane changes or last minute exits..I have a very poweful motorcycle and I use it keep well out in front of everbody and near nobody when possible..Too much traffic take a break these ass holes will kill you to get home from work 2 minutes early..Its hardly ever the bikes fault mostly speed, pilot error and bad judement..If you story starts out there was nothing I could do after you crash sell your bike you are going to die or be maimed for life..It is a dangerous sport and an adrenaline high you need to control.I drive balls to the wall on occasion but suicidal kamikaze no!!!..I have sky dived 6 times at age fiftythree and there is even less reaction time to save your butt..Feeling of flying no I got the hurtling to horrible death feeling at 125-150 mph..All I am saying is think and keep thinking what would I do if this or the other car or truck did this or that and how would I react or place my motorcycle to be in the safest spot to get away and survive..It,s easy it becomes second nature like watching front wheels of parked cars on side streets because if they are pointing straight and not toward the roadway you are safe and they pose no threat..I will not bore readers any more but check your mindset if your attention span is bad that day or people ask you the same question three times to only get a huh! don,t ride that day..good luck see you all on the road..
Dave -Would be nice  August 8, 2009 09:54 PM
if they included motorcycles in this program. I can't see me selling my old car for a new bike but I can definitely see me buying a new motorcycle if they gave you a tax credit or something like that. Considering motorcycles and scooters are the king of mpg and traffic de-congestion, it would be wise to try and push more would be riders to go buy one.
Phil -To David Strangelove  August 7, 2009 09:42 PM
I think they would be aiming for people to trade in their older "clunkers" (18 mpg or less) and get a motorcycle. Not trade in an older bike for a new bike.

I dont see the federal government ever taking motorcyclists seriously enough to ever create a program to get older motorcycles off the roads.

You go ahead and do that, see how far you get before you end up going through the back window of someones SUV. Then at least no one will have to read your worthless posts.
