Is Supercross Better Without Reed and Stewart?

Monday, February 15, 2010

We love 'em, but do we miss them?

Chad Reed succumbed to injury at the Phoenix round and James Stewart pulled out after Anaheim 2. Since then we’ve seen the stadium racing series blossom into a four-way battle for the title. Ryan Dungey has watched his once-17-point advantage evaporate by missing the podium. While he suffers the pressure of leading the world’s top SX series, Josh Hill has been slugging away on his San Manuel Yamaha with a string of four second-place finishes. Now the two are tied at 123 points with Ryan Villopoto, who is building steam with his second victory, just three points behind. Even though he’s at 98 points, we’ll include Davi Millsaps in this title battle because of the notable inconsistency of these riders and Millsaps’ proven abilities with a win at San Diego.

Meteoric superstars like James, Chad and Ricky Carmichael before them do wonders. Every sport needs a hero. But at the same time, the racing gets pretty boring when you can virtually guarantee the winner. It’s a topic we’ve all heard before.

No Stewart. Four race winners (though JS was one of them). No Reed. Four-way title fight.

Now, I’m not sayin’. I’m just sayin’…

The racing is more exciting, but Stewart is missing so the best rider is out. Who wants to watch racing without the best rider out there? No matter who wins this year, there will be an asterisk next to their name. Chad Reed knows this asterisk well.

As for missing Reed? Nope, I don't miss him at all. I don't care if he never returns and I know that's how a lot of fans feel. I guarantee he wouldn't be second place in points if he was still racing this season. And next year, if he doesn't wimp out, he probably won't even make the podium on a regular basis.

Just glad the also rans have their time to get on the box. Maybe when Reed & Stewart are back they will have to work harder to win. Time will tell.

No for the four others to be the best they have to beat the best, and its always good to watch ree and stewart battle hard and fast makes it exciting

Not really. But when they come back it will be very cool. 2 guys with too much pride to back down going up against 4 (maybe even more) riders fighting for the title.

Nope...don't "miss" them per se as I do wish they still were healthy just so I can see Hill, Dungey, and Villopoto finish ahead of them.
