motocross training
Obviously not me, but you get the idea...
The eight-week mark has passed since knee surgery and I was just released from regularly scheduled physical therapy, freed to use the regular gym as much as I can stand it. Last night I headed out for a full leg workout, determined to hit it hard and start whipping my depleted leg muscle back into shape. It didn’t take long to get the left kicker wore out, but what really surprised me was how much the rest of my body has atrophied.

Apparently sitting on my ass for the last two months has done a number on my core muscles. I’ve noticed several times in the past week that my posture is alarmingly bad. I’ve always been a bit of a sloucher, but this is getting ridiculous. I practically had my face in my dinner plate two nights ago.

Once my leg was done I moved to some abdominal exercises. One in particular involves hanging from arm straps and elevating the legs. I used to do this with a medicine ball between my legs for extra weight, but just holding my body up in the straps was difficult, and it wasn’t my abs so much as my lower back and obliques. They say you don’t stop riding because you get old - you get old because you stop riding. At this rate I’m gonna need dentures and Depends before long…

Amen, Gents. The leg isn't cleared to take off-road hammering, so for now the gym is the best I can do. But you're both absolutely right. It's still going to take seat time to really get back into riding shape. Nothing else can simulate that.

Aloha
I started riding when I was 44, Kauai Hair & Hound motorcycle racing caused me to instantly stop smoking and slugging beer.

After 11 Big Island Mauna Kea 200 Enduros, motocross and circle track, I was in top shape @ 55 but some twisted knees and a few broken arms, I lost the edge as healing time went on so I switched over to sportbikes, the racers edge disappeared because all I had to do was hang my ass off the inside turn and hang on to the eye bleeding fast 1K cc crotch rockets I used up over the years---radar snatched my license a few times for 90 days turning me into a pot belly old man real fast.

Now at 69 yr old I just bought an 09 KTM 200---I'm now out in the Hawaii jungles riding wild pig trails and coastline lava rocks slowly getting the racers stamina/endurance edge back---Gym repetitions won't do what real "on the gas" in nasty conditions can accomplish---I'm back to a 31" waistline with 6 pack abs and knees are bending fluidly once again---though I'll never give up my 08 CBR 1000 RR, got all the trick radar/laser detection so I can continue to "go faster than the crash".

But riding isn't a sport and it doesn't take any physical skill, athleticism, stamina, or physical strength! OK that was total sarcasm and along the lines of something some idiot who has never ridden a motorcycle would say.

Riding does keep you in shape. And working out at the gym still won't keep you in riding shape. Riding shape is just different.
