Carmichael Speaks his Mind on Neck Braces

Tuesday, March 02, 2010
Ryan Dungey extended his points lead over Josh Hill with his win at Atlanta.
Dungey early in the race, with brace.
RC has been a training partner/mentor for Ryan Dungey since the Minnesota rider joined the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team. During guest appearances with SPEED TV, it’s obvious by the way he talks about the rising moto star that he’s pretty fond of the kid and thinks highly of him. But, during the race in Atlanta, a subject emerged where the GOAT and Dungey don’t see eye-to-eye. With about five laps to go, Dungey’s neck brace came undone and he was forced to wrestle it off one-handed and toss it next to the mechanics’ section. This was while he was leading the race - talk about distracting!

Jeff Emig and Ralph Sheheen went on to discuss how riding without a piece of protective equipment that has become as familiar as a helmet or boots must make the rider feel naked. Ricky, on the other hand, was fairly dismissive of the neck brace concept as a

whole – basically saying he wasn’t convinced of the current testing methods and results. As a man who has crashed at speeds unimaginable to all but about four people on the planet, that’s saying something - on live television, no less.

It’s always good to see and hear Carmichael in the announcing booth, and when this guy talks, people listen. I doubt that Leatt was very pumped on it, though…

Of course those comments come from somebody who wishes to remain anonymous. It's quite laughable.

you guys are idiots. seriously. how many dead kids have you seen due to a neck injusy? how many dead parents have you seen due to neck injuries?
a broken collar bone or sternum sounds like a MUCH better injury than your c-spine. and do you really think these comanies are fly by night and put NO research into these? my god people. these have been in development for a while, much longer than you think. and they do work. take it from a paramedic who works at races.
simply unbelievable the lack of common sense. i foresee you both cracking you neck open and wondering why you didnt wear one.....

I wear all the protective gear I get get my hands on (helmet, chest protector, boots, knee pads, etc) except for a neck brace. Not convinced yet either, and there are stories of broken backs because of it. Until better proof comes out on the effectiveness, I will not be wearing one.
Tim B -I applaud Ricky! March 2, 2010 02:21 PM
I have to say I ride about as fast as Ethel and Mable drive on a Sunday drive to church. I don't take the risks or reach the speeds that the pros do, but paralysis has always been my biggest fear. And I agree with Ricky about these neck braces. From the beginning I've sworn they're a stupid looking gimmick. The braces might help in some accidents, but if you land on your head the wrong way I don't think they will prevent an injury. I'm glad one of the biggest names spoke out and put these braces and the manufacturers in their place instead of being trendy and/or wearing one just for the sponsorship money.
