CRF250R Wins Shootout, Continues Testing
Wednesday, February 23, 2011
We're going from track to trail with the '11 Honda CRF250R.
You might have noticed that we’re pretty fond of the new 2011 Honda CRF250R
. It just defended its title in our 2011 250 Motocross Shootout
and we’ve hung on to the victor for further assessment at different motocross tracks. I transported the CRF up north to our Medford headquarters and while we’re waiting for the most recent batch of snow/rain to melt/drain off the moto track, I’ve taken it out for a pair of day-long trail rides. One of the things that helped the Honda score so highly with our testers is its supple suspension. I found out pretty quickly that it works darn well off-road also. With some slight tweaking it will be good for fast-paced trail riding. One area I see it having problems is with tight singletrack where the front end will deflect off small imbedded rocks, but it seems to work well in most everything else.
We’re going to start trying out some products on this baby and custom suspension might be in the works. For now I’ve got a Two Brothers exhaust
to bolt on and the oil needs freshening now that we’re around 18 hours. I’m planning on dumping in some Maxima oil
to see if we can make that slick-shifting tranny even better. If the timing works out a coworker should be bringing back a set of soft-terrain Bridgestone tires
. With a bunch of rain and snow lately they’ll be perfect to mount the Grip Studs
I’ve had in my office for awhile. I tried them on a Yamaha YZ250F
already, but that didn’t turn out too well (installation snafu on my part, more details on that in the actual review).
Stay tuned. In the meantime be sure to watch all the dirt bike videos
from our shootout to see what this class of machines is all about.
