With three slots that are tapered to fit different size front tires, and three heavy-duty tie-down loops, the Bed Buddy makes securing your bike a lot easier.
When hauling a motorcycle, the pickup truck is usually the preferred means of transportation. But as equipped from the factory, a standard pickup bed has a few shortcomings.
We’re sure there are a few of you out there with truck beds that are concaved toward the back of the cab after buckling under the pressure of a tied-down bike. To add to that, most truck beds have limited tie-down locations and a smooth steel surface that rarely keeps the front tire of the bike in the same place it started at for the duration of the trip.
Coming to the rescue is the Bed Buddy Pro LT , the latest in motorcycle transportation technology from CCR Sport. The Bed Buddy transforms a conventional truck bed into a bike-hauling machine. The apparatus is essentially a motorcycle tie-down support brace that helps to protect your truck’s bed while simultaneously offering additional tie-down locations and a secure nook for the front wheel of the bike.
Manufactured from lightweight high-grade steel, the Bed Buddy consists of a box-section main tube that is bolted horizontally across the width of the bed at its forward end. Built into the unit are three slots that are tapered to fit different size front tires, and three heavy-duty tie-down loops are strategically placed on both ends and at the very middle of the unit.
The lightweight high-grade steel keeps your truck bed from buckling under the pressure of a tied-down bike.
Generally speaking, the set-up is best suited for hauling one or two bikes. Two dirt bikes fit wonderfully in the outward positions, while two full-size streetbikes will fit tightly. If you do have the need to carry three dirt bikes, CCR Sport sells an optional 8-inch extension ($34.95) that enables the bikes to be staggered so the handlebars don’t fight for the same space, but it will be a tight fit.
Installing the powder-coated Bed Buddy requires minimal mechanical proficiency and only requisite knowledge of a power drill. We completed the installation process in just over 15 minutes with a drill, 5/16 drill bit, tape measure, and a pair of ½ in. wrenches.
The most difficult part is lining up the Bed Buddy so it’s perfectly centered and attached in the most useful position possible. CCR Sport recommends mounting the Bed Buddy to a flat surface, preferably near the top of the bed. We started by positioning the center hole then lining up the outer drill holes so that the brace was centered vertically and horizontally with the bed wall. After drilling the holes, we inserted the allen-head bolts and tightened up the nuts. This requires a bit of hand eye coordination. We held the nuts in place with a wrench and fastened the brace to the bed wall, taking care not to over-tighten the bolts.
Our first experience with the Bed Buddy proved that the unit is a big improvement over hauling bikes without one. We threw two dirt bikes into the back our MCUSA pickup and were surprised at how well they were held in place. We also liked how the wheel slots are spaced so that the handlebars of the bikes don’t bang into one another.
One of the key selling points that we mentioned earlier is the three additional tie-down points. But they are placed a little on the narrow side, making the actual tie-down angle a bit steep for the best security.
The Bed Buddy proves to be nearly perfect for hauling MXers, but you should be aware of one of our concerns when it comes to tying down streetbikes using only its tie points. The strain the weight of a streetbike puts on the thin wall of the truck bed to which the Bed Buddy is attached is a bit disconcerting especially if hauling two 450 lbs superbikes. We can visibly see the bed bowing in along with the Bed Buddy support at the points where the attachment hardware is secured. So, rather than use those points we chose to use the stock tie-down points in the bed for the outside ties. The Bed Buddy’s saving grace is its center tie point that is perfect when hauling a pair of sickles, whether dirt or street.
That being said, there’s no question the 11 lb. Bed Buddy is an excellent way to improve the hauling security of your bike while protecting the front of your truck bed from damage.
CCR Sport offers three different sizes to fit most trucks, but the mini-truck size fits a maximum of just two bikes. At $139.95, the Bed Buddy is a very cost-effective way to transport motorcycles with greater security and less potential damage to your truck. It is highly recommended for those who like to haul bikes as well as ass.
