Tim “Tooltime” McAdams has been with Team Makita Suzuki’s sensational rookie Ryan Dungey since his first pro race at Millville in 2006. “Tooltime” drove a Suzuki support truck for eight years, then moved to the race team and worked with new riders like Dungey.

Dungey was a title contender in his debut supercross season earlier this year, and he’s a front runner in the Nationals as well. “It’s pretty amazing,” said McAdams of Dungey’s beginnings, “He really surprised me. The first day we actually went testing with him, before Millville he was putting lap times down that were within three seconds of Ricky’s at Glen Helen! He was tearing up the track then and pretty much impressed everybody at that point.”

“As far as the outdoors,” he said, “my thinking was for him to use the first four rounds to learn. Every week I would ask did you learn something? He would say ‘yeah’. In supercross (testing) the first day, it was scary actually to watch him on the track. He went from spooky to watch on the track the first day, to within two weeks to looking pretty fast. Then when the season came around we thought he could do it. He looked really fast. Just having some bad luck is the only thing that kept us away from the title. He hauled ass.” (He finished fifth in the competitive Eastern SX Lites and tallied four race wins, including the East/West Shootout. – Ed.)

And he did it all on a 2007 RM-Z250 with Showa kit suspension, a factory-worked motor that looks plain but reflects a lot of development time, and numerous trick parts direct from Suzuki of Japan.

“Tooltime” has worked with many of Suzuki’s rookies in recent years, and Dungey has been the strongest yet. “I started off on this team with Shane Bess, then I had Matthew Lalloz for a year,” he said. “I worked with Brian Gray, and then finished with (Branden) Jesseman for half a season, the year after he won the title.”

What makes Dungey stand out? “His desire, and his willingness to listen and to learn,” says McAdams, “He soaks it up. Broc Hepler just did everything on his own. He didn’t want to listen to what people suggested, which is not a bad thing, he had a good program. He still has. He stayed at his own track and wanted to do his own program. But, Ryan listens to everybody.”

Making Dungey’s RM-Z 250:

Motor – CP pistons, Factory camshaft, FCC clutch plates/Hinson clutch basket, pressure plate, and hub. Stock cylinder/valves, stock crank – trued and balanced. “We do all the motor work at the factory in-house. I build the motor but Ian Harrison comes up with the settings. There is a lot of time in these motors, a lot of time invested. If we can start with the production stuff and come up with a good package, we are better off. Parts are more available the closer we are, and it is better for sales, in the end.”
Carburetor - Stock.
Ignition - Factory, programmable. We just have settings that Ryan likes.

Air filter - Twin Air.
Suspension - Kit Showa – serviced by RG3.
Triple Clamps - Suzuki of Japan.
Tires - Bridgestone. “Doug (Schopinsky) at Bridgestone picks our tires. We all talk about it – then we trust Bridgestone a lot. For a weekend there are as many two or three that we can use.
Transmission – Standard. “The standard gearing in these bikes is actually pretty good.”
Exhaust - Pro Circuit Titanium header and silencer.
Footpegs and Brackets - Titanium, Suzuki of Japan.
Brakes - Oversized front disc, titanium rear lever, stock calipers.
Fuel Tank – Stock, wrapped in heat-shield tape.
Rims – Excel.
Hubs - Factory Suzuki of Japan.
Grips and Bars - Pro Taper.
Oil/Lube – Maxima.
Chain - D.I.D.

It pays to be a factory rider.
Look familiar? That’s because you saw them on Ricky Carmichael’s RM-Z450. Just because he’s not the Goat doesn’t mean Dungey gets left-over, standard washers.

Sprockets - Tag Metals.
Levers - Stock. The clutch perch and front brake caliper rotate on Teflon bushings, supplied by Suzuki of Japan.
Shifter - Factory Suzuki.
Miscellaneous Titanium Hardware - Just like Ricky Carmichael and Ivan Tedesco’s factory RM-Z450s, Dungey’s bike has titanium hardware everywhere. Suzuki doesn’t use a custom hard parts catalog like some of the teams. The cool parts come direct from Suzuki of Japan.
