Joe Rocket Steel Pants deliver casual denim blue jean look and comfort with the extra protection of steel-reinforced nylon.
In the world of motorcycle protective gear, pants are the most underrated and overlooked. Wear a helmet? Obviously. Jacket? Duh. Gloves? Of course. Boots? No doubt. Pants? Eh, my regular jeans are okay.
Admit it. Most of us are guilty of taking our chances with the plain old 501s when we know better. Enter the Joe Rocket Steel Pants, comfortable riding jeans with more crash protection than your regular denim.
One of the many reinforced denim riding jeans on the market, the JR Steel Pants are bolstered by the protective power of, you guessed it, steel, and have been our recent go-to riding pants for daily commuting. The steel-reinforced nylon panels located in the seat and knees contribute to a claimed 0.5% steel in the overall design.
Fortunate enough to never actually test the abrasion resistance for ourselves, in our gut estimation that minute 0.5% of metal would help the JR Steel Jeans to hold up better than conventional denim – although they will never deliver the protection of leather or armor-infused textile designs.
We’ve worn the Joe Rocket Steel Pants almost a year now and the lightweight, convenient design keeps finding its way into our gearbag.
The styling of the $89.99 JR Steel Pants is pretty standard fare, maybe a little vanilla. This isn’t necessarily a bad trait, but we’ve enjoyed some Icon and Shift jean designs a little more. Compared to those other denim riding jeans we’ve sampled the relaxed fit and boot cut of the Steel Pants also feel more constrictive, with the 36 waist of our test unit feeling more like a 34.
Having worn the Steel Pants for quite some time now, they have proven very durable. Multiple washings of the 14.5-ounce denim have not seen any deterioration to the fabric or the stitching and they would certainly stay in use for multiple riding seasons.
Minor complaints aside, our greatest endorsement of the Joe Rocket Steel Pants is the fact that we haven’t stopped wearing our test units for almost a year now. Convenient and durable, you will likely see them in our bike test photo galleries for quite some time to come.
Easy, convenient and reasonably priced, the Joe Rocket Steel Pants are a welcome addition to a rider’s gearbag.
