Troy Bayliss on the way to victory in Donington Race 1 2008.

Rain spoiled the World Superbike racing at Donington and delivered some surprise names on the two results sheets. Troy Bayliss took the checkers in Race 1, no surprises there, with British Superbike champion Ryuichi Kiyonari the victor in Race 2. In both races a multitude of names filed the dreaded DNF on the wet surface of the British circuit.

Race 1 was filled with red flags and restarts, with Bayliss finishing atop the aggregate timing sheet. One of the aforementioned surprises was second-place finisher Tom Skyes, with the British Superbike rider making the most of his wild card entry aboard the Rizla Suzuki GSX-R1000. Ducati satellite rider Max Biaggi rounded out the Race 1 podium, with Honda’s Gregorio Lavilla and Suzuki’s Yukio Kagayama filling out the top 5. Key riders to not finish the first race include the four closest rivals to Bayliss in the points, Troy Corser, Max Neukirchner, Carlos Checa and Noriyuki Haga.

In Race 2 it was Bayliss who scored the DNF, along with Haga again. The two-time reigning British Superbike champ, Kiyonari, displayed his mastery of the British circuit. Once again another British Superbike racer, Honda’s Cal Crutchlow, tallied the second spot with Corser scoring third. Former MotoGP, BSB and AMA SB rider James Ellison was fourth followed by Ducati’s Michel Fabrizio.

Only three rounds now remain in the 2008 season and Bayliss, at 359, is 101 points ahead of his nearest rival, that other SBK Troy, Corser. With his dismal Donington performance, Neukirchner has yielded second place by a single point. Checa is fourth at 240, followed by Nitro Nori at 230. In two weeks the next round will take place at Vallelunga, where Bayliss could close out the title.
