Aprilia’s newest superbike weapon, the 2009 RSV4, was an instant hit at its recent unveiling at the Intermot show in Germany.
Aprilia is back. And they aren’t messing around. Or at least so they say. And judging by their 2009 World Superbike rider lineup of multi-time 250cc GP world champion Max Biaggi and Alex Hofmann (current test rider), both of whom have an uber-long list of racing credentials, we think it would be best for the competition to take them seriously. We are.
The WSBK boys will be astride the all-new RSV4, a first for the Italian marque, which until now has been known for its V-Twin sport motorcycles and an ever-growing scooter lineup. The 65-degree V-Four engine sits at 998.9cc, just under the 1000cc Superbike limit, and features “total electronic engine management,” thus we expect fly-by-wire throttle and traction control to come as standard equipment. They claim these electronics will be managing in the neighborhood of 180 horsepower, putting it right up there with the best of them. To this we say, bring it on!
Max Biaggi and Alex Hoffman are two lucky men – they get to be the first two riders to compete on the new Aprilia superbike.
They have dubbed the street going version a “full racing replica,” complete with a compact and lightweight chassis, which from looking at photos appears to be very small in size, not much bigger than your average middleweight. It is also fully adjustable for headstock position and angle, as well as swingarm pivot and engine height, making it one of the most adjustable chassis’ on the market today. It’s made from a mix of cast and pressed sheets of aluminum, as is the swingarm.
The angular bodywork is said to be equally as good in the wind tunnel as it is on the eyes, and in photos it definitely is a pleasure to look at.
High-end, fully-adjustable Ohlins suspension graces the new machine both front and rear, attached to what looks to be mono-bloc Brembo brakes, which we can tell you from past experience, is a hard-to-beat combination. And with a claimed dry weight of just under 400 lbs (398 to be exact), we are expecting Aprilia’s return to Superbike to be a good one.
