Considering the sheer number of options of aftermarket exhausts these days, choosing the right one for your sportbike can be tricky. LeoVince, an Italian maker of performance motorcycle exhaust systems, makes this decision easier by offering high-quality full exhaust systems for a very reasonable price of $1299. We fitted one to our 2009 Suzuki GSX-R1000, a bike that comes stock with huge, ugly twin-pipes and aesthetically has a great need for an exhaust makeover.
LeoVince’s SBK Full Factory System is comprised of a stainless-steel header and mid-pipe. From there one can choose between a carbon fiber or titanium muffler, which comes mated to a carbon fiber end-cap. The kit comes with all hardware, including a tidy new carbon fiber muffler bracket. Suzuki’s GSX-R line of bikes has a reputation for being easy to work on, so it wasn’t a surprise how easy LeoVince’s pipe was to fit. We were amazed by how well every piece fit together and the build quality of the pipe itself, especially the elaborate bends and near-perfect welds.
After installation we rolled the GSX-R on our scales and were shocked to find that our bike had shed 16 lbs. over the stock set-up. Equally as staggering is the power boost. Both the engine’s bottom-end and mid-range are more robust from 5000 to 8000 rpm. Plus, there’s an extra 6-hp at peak and a vastly improved over-rev that delivers nearly 10 horsepower over stock. Considering how spot-on engine fueling was with the stock exhaust, we assumed that fitting a freer flowing exhaust might comprise that. Not the case as jetting remains perfect.
Most aftermarket exhausts substantially raise the decibel (sound) factor, so we were surprised to find out that at idle the exhaust measured exactly the same as stock mufflers (86 decibels). What our sound measuring device can’t detect, however, is the much more appealing the snarl expelled out of the sleek titanium muffler now was at speed. And for those who prefer to make a bit more of an entrance, you can remove the internal silencer insert for an even deeper, more aggressive exhaust note.
Leo’s $1299 exhaust system truly offers it all. Not only is it better looking than the stock twin-pipe set-up, it contributed to making a lighter and more powerful motorcycle while also retaining a sensible yet pleasing exhaust note, leaving it up to the rider to decide how loud they want the bike to sound.
