Travis Pastrana
Travis Pastrana almost doubled the rally car distance jump record with a 274-ft flight off the Long Beach pier for the latest Red Bull New Year No Limits event.

Travis Pastrana rang in the New Year with a new world record, jumping his rally car at the Red Bull New Year No Limits event in Long Beach, California. The popular off-road star drove his Subaru off the Long Beach pier and flew 269 feet in the air before landing on a floating barge in the harbor.

Pastrana’s jump wasn’t without some drama, with an unexpectedly hard landing. Unable to brake as planned, the car slid sideways before slamming into the barrier fence. Pastrana later commented the landing surface was much slicker than expected.

Immediately after landing, the nine-time X Games gold medalist jumped out of the car under his own power without injury. Jogging up to the top of the landing ramp, the Nitro Circus star celebrated before the crowd. Then, in fitting Pastrana fashion, he backflipped off the ramp and into the water below.

In a press release for the event, Pastrana said of his stunt: “I was really nervous all day long, but when I got in the car I felt really calm. It was definitely a lot more fun than any of my practice runs, and when I landed, man did that retaining wall come up fast! I’m just happy the car and I didn’t end up in the drink. What a way to head into 2010!”
