Moto2 Bike, KTM RC8R Enter Isle of Man TT

Some big news surrounding the 2010 running of the Isle of Man TT has just been announced. While Moto2 machines are still brand new to the GP scene this year, replacing the 250cc ranks, one will also be entered in the Senior TT.

While still new to GP ranks, it’s been announced a Moto2 machine will take on the 2010 Isle of Man TT.

British chassis manufacturer FTP will be supplying the Honda-powered machine and it will be very close in spec to those raced in Grand Prix this year by the likes of Alex Debon and Andrea Iannone. Further keeping the British dream alive, it will be ridden by U.K. native Olie Linsdell, who will be following in his father Steve Linsdell’s footsteps as he takes on the legendary Mountain Course.

His father was the last man to ride a true GP bike in the Senior TT when he piloted a 500cc Paton in 2007. The elder Linsdell has also run the race on a Yamaha GTS1000 and Triumph Saxon in the past.

The younger Linsdell comes into the event at a mere 22 years old, though already a double-race-winner from the 2007 Manx Grand Prix –  the qualifying event for new riders attempting to take on the TT. He suffered a setback last year with a broken leg in practice for his first-ever TT. But the talented young street racer is now 100% fit and was back in action at the classic Manx GP at the end of ’09, leading until a mechanical forced him to retire early.

“The Moto2 GP class is exciting for everyone at the moment and I’m delighted and honored to get the opportunity to race one at the TT,” said Olie Linsdell. “There’s a big buzz around the class and while the 600cc bike won’t be quick enough to challenge the Superbikes for the win in the Senior TT, there’s no reason at all why it can’t lap in excess of 125mph and get inside the top-10, which would be a great achievement.”

“Both the team and I obviously have a lot to learn about how the bike will cope with the Mountain Course but the chassis is as good as anything else out there and we’ll be aiming to match, if not better, the 600cc Supersport lap times,” he continued. “The whole project is sure to create a lot of interest during the TT fortnight and we’re confident we can do it justice and get a credible result.”

Hon Martyn Quayle, MHK, Minister for Tourism and Leisure, Isle of Man Government added: “The TT has always provided a great test-bed for new and innovative machinery since its inception in 1907 and everyone is really looking forward to seeing how the Moto 2 GP bike performs on the course. This year’s event is sure to be fascinating for spectators with a wide range of manufacturers – new and established – competing against each other as well as the return of some old favorites.”

In other TT news, Austrian manufacturer KTM are set to enter the 2010 event as Red Line Motorcycles has announced they will field an RC8R in the Superbike, Superstock and Senior TT races.

Riding the 1195cc V-Twin will be England’s own James Edmeades. The 26-year-old has several years of TT experience already under his belt, having ridden in ’06, ’07 and ’08, narrowly missing the coveted 120 mph mark in ’07. He already has two bronze replicas to his name from the nine races in which he has finished. In addition to racing the TT, Edmeades will race the RC8R in this year’s British Superbike Championship in the all-new Evo class.

“The opportunity to become the first KTM rider at the Isle of Man TT Races is a tremendous honor for me and after the three great years I enjoyed between 2006 and 2008, I can’t wait to get back on the Island,” said Edmeades in the press release. “The KTM RC8R is a superb bike and I’m sure it will perform well around the course with its excellent handling qualities.

He continued: “I was carrying an injury when I was last at the TT and didn’t perform as I would have liked which is something I’m keen to put right this year. I’m sure both myself and the team will give a good account of ourselves and further prove the capabilities of the KTM Superbike machine.”

KTM now joins Honda, YamahaSuzuki and Kawasaki with its official manufacturer supported efforts at this year’s TT.
