Jake Johnson 5 and Johnny Lewis 10 - 2010 AMA Flat Track Daytona
Jake Johnson (5) scored the victory in the second night of GNC Singles racing at the new Daytona Flat Track.

Jake Johnson led an all-Honda podium for the second night of GNC Singles racing at the new Daytona Flat Track. Joining Johnson on the steps were Kenny Coolbeth and Jared Mees. Yamaha’s Sammy Halbert, who won the season opener the night before, finished a disappointing 18th courtesy of an opening lap crash.

Johnson’s win was a flag-to-flag affair, starting from pole, grabbing the holeshot and leading every lap. Coolbeth did mount a charge on the final lap, but Johnson’s gap was too much.

“I got the holeshot and I said, ‘Be smooth, be smooth,’ I knew I had somebody close to me the whole race,” said Johnson in a press release from Daytona International Speedway. “About four laps to go, I peeked back and saw that No. 2,” Johnson said. “I just tried to stay smooth and try not to make any mistakes.

Pro Singles

Honda rider J.D. Beach took the win in the Pro Singles race, followed by Wednesday’s winner Jeffrey Carver. The 2009 Pro Singles champ, Honda’s Brack Baker, completed the rostrum.

J.D. Beach (95) recovered from a fourth-place AMA SuperSport finish to take the win in Pro Singles at Daytona.

Beach’s night went much better than the opener, where he crashed and caused a restart, only to finish seventh. The young rider, who earlier in the day placed fourth in a spirited AMA SuperSport road race was pleased with the result, saying afterword in a DIS press statement: “It was a good race, a lot better than yesterday. It was a lot of fun.”

The next stop on the Flat Track schedule is in Arizona at Yavapai Downs, where the GNC Twins and Pro Singles will race on May 1st.
