Scooter riders from around the country and beyond will be heading to the heart of Texas this week for Amerivespa 2010, the ‘largest scooter rally in the US.’

Scooter riders, rejoice. Venerable Vespa riders from around the country will be converging on the home of the Alamo, San Antonio, Texas, for Amerivespa 2010, as the city hosts what is billed as the ‘largest scooter rally in the US.’ The Vespa Club of America, in affiliation with Ne’er Do Wells and the Alamo Scoots scooter clubs, have a full weekend of fun events planned that will be infused with Southwestern flair and showcase southern hospitality.

It kicks off Thursday, May 27 with group rides through the Texas Hill Country and a chance to go tubing on the Guadalupe River. Others will take a longer route to Fredericksburg, Texas and then on to Blanco for a tour of the Real Ale Brewing Company. That night there will be an outdoor movie at the host hotel, El Tropicano, out by the pool, followed by live music at various clubs around town. And that’s just the first day.

The second day starts out with a police-escorted ride from the El Tropicano Hotel to the Alamo. The group will pose for

a panoramic photo with their scooters in front of the historic fort. Multiple rides to different locales throughout the city are offered after that, including the El Mercado Ride that will benefit the Scooter Relief Fund and the Ronald McDonald House. Amerivespa’s Dinner Ride will head to the Blue Star Complex for a BBQ dinner sponsored by the Blue Star Brewing Co. It wouldn’t be a trip to Texas without some killer BBQ, right? Then a night on the town and more live music is planned, from Country & Western/Hillbilly Americana played by The In and Outlaws offered up at The Friendly Spot to the driving Southern rock/punkabilly sounds of Dash Rip Rock, The Hickoids, Sons of Hercules and Dixie Hammer that will be jamming onstage at The Korova nite club.

Saturday is the date of the Concours d’Elegance where Vespa owners will vie for prizes and prestige in numerous categories. The

Awards will be given for first place in each category and ‘Honorable Mentions’ will also be awarded in selected categories. ‘Grand Prize’ awards will be presented to ‘Best of Show’ and a ‘Radical Custom’ award will be presented as well. Amerivespa attendees will also get a chance to vote in the People’s Choice category. A friendly Miss Vespa Contest will take place as participants are asked to show up at El Tropicano Hotel’s Coronado Room in their best riding outfit. Concours awards will be presented at the Amerivespa banquet that night at the hotel.

The event will wrap up on Sunday with a brunch and River Barge Ride to the Pearl Brewery. A Gymkhana and slow race will take place in the parking lot of the brewery, followed by a raffle. Two more rides around town are planned after that, one to Stieren St. SouthTown and to LaTuna. More music and bar hopping Sunday night will wrap up the festivities.

Vespa and scooter owners unite. You won’t want to miss this party planned deep in the heart of Texas.
