Elena Myers made history today after becoming the first woman to win an AMA Pro road race. Congratulations Elena.
In a wild, crash-filled AMA Supersport race that was supposed to feature a battle between East Division points leader Cameron Beaubier and three-time race SuperSport West winner Joey Pascarella, it was Elena Myers who would steal the headlines by winning the red-flagged race, writing her name in the history books as the first woman to win an AMA Pro road racing event.
The race was stopped for the second time on Lap 10 after Joey Pascarella high-sided himself out of second place on Turn 9 with Myers in the lead. Even though Pascarella was in the lead at the end of the last lap before the stoppage, he was bumped to the back of the pack after being the cause of the second race stoppage, handing the victory to Myers.
“Elena just broke the barrier. I’m proud of her,” said Top Gun Racing’s Tyler O’Hara, who finished the race in third.
It was a tale of three races. Rockwell Performance Cameron Beaubier jumped out from his pole position to open up a 0.448 second gap on Pascarella by the end of the first lap. Beaubier, from Roseville, California, would push that lead up to 0.875 seconds by Lap 2. Meanwhile, Myers used a strong start to jump up a couple of positions and had moved up to fifth by the end of the first lap.
Jake Gagne was hanging tight with Pascarella before crashing out on Turn 9 on Lap 6, bringing the first stoppage of the race. At the the time, Beaubier had over two seconds on Pascarella for the lead.
Joey Pascarella had just been passed by Elena Myers when he high-sided heading into Turn 9 on Lap 10, bringing out the red flag and handing the victory to Myers.
But on the restart, Beaubier got a bad start off the line and O’Hara grabbed the holeshot, followed by Pascarella and Myers. By the end of Lap 8, the DNA Energy Drink/ CNR Motorsports rider Pascarell had moved into the lead while making his debut race on the Ducati while Myers had also drafted past O’Hara. The Ducati pilot would run wide on the next lap though, giving Myers the opening she needed to shoot into the lead. A few turns later, Pascarella would crash out, almost taking out Beaubier in the process. The red-flag then came out and history was made as Myers was awarded her first AMA Supersport victory.
Beaubier, despite leading the most laps, got the short end of the stick and had to settle for second place. O’Hara would grab the final spot on the podium.
