Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Bryan Smith led for 21 of the 25-lap contest and took the checkers at the Springfield Mile by a mere 0.048 seconds ahead of Chris Carr.
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Bryan Smith claimed victory at the famed Springfield Mile during Round 14 of the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Grand National Championship. Smith took the win in the 25-lap event by just 0.047 seconds ahead of Harley-Davidson/Dallas Fort Worth Honda‘s Chris Carr. The podium was rounded out by the Defending Grand National Twins Champion Jared Mees, who was only 0.048 seconds behind Carr aboard his Blue Springs Harley-Davidson.
Harley-Davidson of Wausau’s Willie McCoy paid a visit to the Springfield Mile with a fourth-place finish, followed by Kenny Coolbeth and Zanotti Racing’sJake Johnson.
“The track was a lot faster for the National,” said Smith. “We were geared too low, it was my call, but I think if we had been geared a little taller I might have been able to get away. That was the idea going in.”
Despite struggles with gearing Smith went on to take the victory during a five-lap battle with Carr, who lost his brakes mid-way through the contest.
“I had to change the way I went into the turns to avoid hitting anyone,” said Carr. “It took a while to figure it out, but I just couldn’t draft the Kawasaki.”
Smith managed to lead for 21 laps with Carr holding the lead for just three. McCoy also managed to throw himself into the mix by leading the field on Lap 10.
Championship leader Joe Kopp was in the top-five early on but lost contact with the frontrunners and had to battle for seventh-place with Kings Kustoms Sammy Halbert. Kopp barley pulled ahead of Halbert with the top-nine riders being separated by just more than one second.
In the four-lap Dash for Cash contest Carr took top honors as Johnson and Mees were pushed back in the final turn on the last lap. Mees managed second while Smith took his only defeat of the day in third.
Kopp’s lead in the Grand National Championship combined points is gradually dwindling with Johnson only 10 points behind the leader. Meanwhile, Mees and Halbert are currently tied in the series for third with 228 points.
