Carlos Checa to Sub for Mika Kallio in MotoGP

Pramac Racing Ducati announced that World Superbike’s Carlos Checa will be filling in for the injured Mika Kallio during the last two rounds of the MotoGP Championship. Earlier this season Kallio suffered a hard fall at Le Mans which has caused lingering shoulder issues. With not much left to fight for in the 2010 Championship, Kallio will be handing the reins over to Checa, who took third in the WSBK Championship this year aboard a Ducati.

Ducatis Carlos Checa had the fastest pace in qualifying on Friday by 0.380 seconds ahead of Jonathan Rea.

“After the decision taken by Mika Kallio not to take part in the last two races, we decided to call a rider with experience and talent that could give us a good end of season,” said Paolo Campinoti, the head of Pramac Racing. “We decided to call Spaniard Carlos Checa who was riding this year a Ducati in the Superbike World Championship. Of course it will be important for him to run as much as possible on Estoril´s track during the free practice session so that he can be able to improve as much as possible his feeling with the bike. We know about his undisputed talent and potential, this is also the reason why I cannot hide that we expect from him a good result in both races that he will race with the colors of the Pramac Racing Team.”
Not only has Checa had an excellent year in World Superbike, but the Spaniard also has solid experience aboard GP bikes with close to 15 years of racing between 1993 and 2007. His best results took place during 1998 in the 500cc class when he finished fourth overall in the championship and in 2002 when he finished fifth overall in the premier class. Checa will be running the final two MotoGP races of the season with Number 71 on the livery due to the fact that his Superbike number, Number 7, is already in use by another rider.
“I really want to thank the Pramac Racing Team for believing in me and for this wonderful gift,” said Checa. “After three years it is a great pleasure for me to return in the MotoGP world, here I have some wonderful memories. So many things have changed over three years ago, both in the mechanics of the bikes and in the MotoGP world, but many others have remained unchanged. I know I should not expect too much because the Ducati Desmosedici GP10 is very different from the bike which I had run this year, but I know many of my next opponents and I will do my best to fight shoulder to shoulder with them to try to finish these two races with positive results.”
