2010 Oregon Coast Ride - Fan Report
After years of riding solo, Stan is joined by his wife for a trip along the Oregon Coast.

I had a fantastic weekend with a great ride Saturday. I’ve been riding now for a little over 5 years and have put a little over 7, 000 miles on my ’09 Sportster XL1200C. About a month ago, out of the clear blue Oregon sky, my wife says, “I think I’d like to ride too!” This, after saying for years (I’m 70 and my wife is let’s say close behind) that motorcycle riding was dangerous and she couldn’t believe why anyone would ride one.

It’s not her first time riding. Years ago, our oldest son bought a motorcycle and took his mom on a short ride. She was scared to death, but agreed to go. After the ride, he said, I’ll never take you on a motorcycle again, because when I lean left, you lean right, and when I lean right, you lean left. When she mentioned giving it another shot, I asked her if she was serious and she said yes. So, off we went around the lake near our house.

I didn’t want to scare her, so I stopped on the way back into town and asked her how she was doing. She said great and wanted to ride up to a town about 12 miles north of us. I said okay, but let’s just take the county road instead of the freeway – I didn’t want her getting scared of the freeway, like I was when I first started riding. I stopped at a light on the way to the county road and she said, let’s take the freeway. To make a long story short, she said it didn’t scare her at all, was really fun, and said she didn’t know why she waited all these years to ride.

Stan and Linda gear up for the ride.

Since that first ride, we’ve been doing a lot of two-up riding around the area and on the freeway at 65 mph. She can hardly wait to ride and got upset a couple days because it was raining, and we couldn’t ride.

Just this last Saturday, the two of us rode 184.4 miles total, over to the coast for clam chowder, and back. The ride was fantastic on scenic country roads and the chowder was really good! And, the most amazing thing is, she leans with the bike now and not the opposite direction. I’m really happy for her and I like riding two-up, because now we can do something together, that we both enjoy. And I have a nice backrest. :)
