ASMF Scales Down Operations Due to Budget

It is with great disappointment I am announcing to the Action Sports Community that ASMF will be scaling down our event coverage operations for 2011 due to budgetary limitations. While I am deeply bothered that we can no longer afford to cover most national events, we are going to continue to cover regional and local events to the best of our ability as our budget permits.

Thanks to our generous past sponsors, volunteers and supporters, we have been able to provide care for more than 10,000 injured athletes since the formation of the foundation in 2003 and as always – “free of charge”. We can take a measure of satisfaction and tremendous pride in knowing that our services have been critically important to the athletes and their families. ASMF has provided on-site sports medicine services at over 200 regional and local events (skate, motocross , BMX, surf and wake) each year as well as the Amateur MX Nationals and acts as core staff for the Professional Dew Tour and King of Wake series. Unfortunately, the economy in the last two years has presented an insurmountable fund-raising challenge. When it became clear we could not go on as before, we have actively sought out sponsors/partners to help us to continue our mission, but no one felt able to take on more in this current economic climate.

Unfortunately, we can no longer cover the salary of our only full time staff member Christine (Director of Operations). She has been kept fully informed of the circumstances and has remained committed through the end. We wish her the best of luck in her future and are truly grateful to all the hard work she has given us over the last 5 years. Her service to keep the foundation running and commitment to the action sports community and its’ athletes has been truly invaluable.
After meeting all of our financial obligations at year-end, we expect to have less than what is needed on hand to cover expenses for all of the National events. In order to provide appropriate on-site services these include; appropriate staffing, replacing necessary medical equipment (X-ray machine) and upgrading the transport vehicle. We have therefore decided to use the remaining funds to continue to cover local and regional events and to hopefully keep us from having to fully dissolve the foundation completely, in hopes that we can survive until the economy turns around and then once again return to full operation and expansion.
This foundation has and will continue to be a big part of my life and is and will always continue to be my passion – to draw more attention to safety issues, increase the notoriety of the action sports as well as continue to improve the level of sports medicine care available to the participating athletes.
