Hilde is holding down the fort at MotoUSA's Southern Oregon HQ. With world-class dirt bike and ATV trails just minutes away, the hardest part is getting him to focus on the keyboard. Two wheels or four, it doesn't matter to our Off-Road Editor so long as it goes like hell in the dirt.

2012 Honda Foreman ES EPS First Look
A brand-new 475cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine has been added to the 2012 model with the addition of liquid cooling.

Honda introduces its first 2012 sport utility ATVs with the release of the Honda Foreman and Foreman ES, both available with electronic power steering. The longitudinally mounted 475cc engine trades its 36mm carburetor for a 36mm EFI throttle body, providing quicker throttle response and better performance at higher altitudes. With EFI and the addition of a radiator for liquid cooling, the standard model jumps eight pounds to a claimed 628-lb curb weight.

Honda retains the shaft-driven, five-speed automatic drivetrain with reverse gear and independent double-wishbone suspension on the front. The drive also contains a torque-sensing front differential for added efficiency and power delivery. A revised swingarm design in the back features a single shock that replaces the existing dual setup, and offers a slightly longer 6.9 inches of travel. A 180mm sealed mechanical drum brake in the rear remains unchanged while larger hydraulic disc brakes provide more bite up front.

Overall length, width and height are all slightly increased and the wheelbase drops from 50.7 inches to 50.4 inches. Ground clearance is up by 0.2 inches, with the seat height also seeing an increase of 0.8 inches. Aesthetics of the ‘12 model have also been updated with more aggressive features. Oversized front and rear fenders provide more splash protection and a new multi-function LCD instrument cluster gives larger readouts for fuel, speed and gear position. The model features a towing capacity of 850 pounds and comes with cargo racks on both the front and rear.

MSRP for the 2011 model was $6799, but a price for the 2012 version has yet to be released.
