Aprilias Max Biaggi carries the number 1 plate in 2011
Aprilia’s Max Biaggi landed the fastest time on Saturday to claim his first Superpole of 2011.

In a dominating display at his home circuit in Italy, Aprilia’s Max Biaggi claimed his first Superpole of the 2011 season by setting the fastest lap of 1’41.745. Using a qualifying tire, Biaggi snagged top honors in Saturday’s qualifying session more than half a second ahead of Yamaha’s Eugene Laverty. Castrol Honda’s Jonathan Rea claimed third in the books 0.869 off the pace of Biaggi, and BMW’s Troy Corser followed the Irishman by less than a tenth to secure a front row start in Sunday’s races. Overall it was a successful day for multiple manufactures as Aprilia, Yamaha, Honda and BMW will all start from the front row.
Laverty’s Yamaha teammate, Marco Melandri, just missed a front row start and placed fifth in the order with a lap of 1’42.714. After taking the fastest time in Friday’s session, BMW’s Leon Haslam was the final rider to place within a second of Biaggi as he snagged a time of 1’42.723. Following the Brit was Team Alstare Suzuki’s Michel Fabrizio, with Aprilia’s Noriyuki Haga occupying the final spot in Row 2.
BMW Motorrad Italia’s Ayrton Badovini will begin from Row 3 after failing to make it into the final Superpole session. Aprilia’s Leon Camier trailed 0.109 behind Badovini to claim the 10th-fastest time with Ducati’s Carlos Checa continuing to struggle at the Italian circuit down in 11th. Checa was shadowed by Team Effenbert-Liberty Racing’s Sylvain Guintoli, who found 12th in the books just 0.03 seconds behind. Kawasaki’s Joan Lascorz, Tom Sykes and Ducati’s Jakub Smrz ran 13th through 15th respectively and are all set to start from Row 4.
