Steve Rapp was able to charge to the front after starting in fourth place to beat defending XR1200 champ Danny Eslick and points leader Chris Fillmore in the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 race at Miller Motorsports Park. The eight-lap contest got underway after wind had picked up and a light drizzle started to fall at the Utah circuit. Thankfully, the rain and cold of yesterday stayed at bay as the V-Twin Harley-Davidsons stared to growl down the start/finish straight.

Motorcycle USA guest test rider, Steve Rapp, took the win in the XR1200 race at Miller, closing the points gap to seven.

Polesetter Mike Barnes snagged the early lead with Fillmore in second, while Eslick was mired back in eighth. Bunched up and drafting down the main straight, Rapp eventually jumped up front. Eslick also moved forward and started mixing it up with Rapp and Fillmore for the top spot.
In the closing laps, Rapp managed to open up a gap and cruise to his first victory of the season. Eslick, racing his Number 1 plate in the class for the first time this year, was second with Fillmore third. Barnes finished the race in fourth place.

“I don’t know what was going on behind me, but it was an exciting race for me,” Rapp said. “I looked back a couple of laps from the end just to see what was going on. It doesn’t take much to get passed on one of these, so I was kind of worried.”

The podium result ensures Fillmore retains the points lead at 78. Rapp, however, has trimmed the gap between first and second down to just seven. Kyle Wyman, who finished eighth at Miller, is a distant third in the points at 51.
